I’m the same to a point, but while my engine’s out I’m painting brackets & bits just to make it look a little bit smarter under the bonnet, I've only polished the inner wings & redone the textured bits with black wax, otherwise the same would happen as what I said about the bumpers. My plan is to try & keep on top of the bodywork for now until such times I can afford to sort it properly.

Well me injin’s all pistoned up, just waiting for my heads to come back from the doctors & I should have something resembling an engine again as opposed to bits strewn all over the workshop.........methodically strewn that is 😉

Yesssss - today i´ve fixed my noisy speedo- i mentioned it was coming from the speedo cable but not at all After dismantling the speedo i could see that the tripcounter sprocket has mooved out due to a missing spring clip. After that a small lever mooved a litte and touching the flywheel. I never thought that this small piece can make such big noises ------ but now the tripcounter is working again - and everything´s silent.

Nice one, I’m used to noisy speedometers with my job, but saying that the old analogue tachographs are getting a bit thin on the ground nowadays

Few more bits in primer today, hopefully get them painted tomorrow night after work, then there’s just the grey bits to prep & paint...........not looking forward to that, I’m sure the end result will be worth it though. Got the rope seal in the front cover today & the cover back on the engine, lots of other tiny but important jobs done, all helps the project on its way.

Queued up in 2 post offices to declare the car tax exempt - first had nobody who understood tax generally and sent me away, 2nd made me wait 40 minutes, tried phoning someone for help, tired to get me to pay 25 quid for a new v5 which I didn't need then tried charging 270 to tax it before telling me they couldn't help and sent me to a 3rd post office that was closed!!
I knew this would be a nightmare as the car has been off the road since 1993 and has never been on sorn but I do have v5 in my name at right address that was updated only a couple of years ago and I have the exemption form for mot and my insurance docs - I have no idea what I'm going to try next but probably a bigger post office if they still exist. The franchises are hopeless!,

Is it possible to do it online at the DVLA website ?

Painted the last of the black bits last night & fitted them tonight, heads are still not ready, they needed a little more work than originally expected, but he reckons I’ll get them back on Friday. I’ve decided not to build my hopes up for getting it running this weekend, it seems every time I do, something or somebody throws another stick through my spokes.

Sadly no - you need to declare the car tax exempt and only at a post office. They should take my V5, check insurance and MOT or a provided exemption form ( which I have) then they just send the V5 back to DVLA to change the tax class.
This sort of hassle seems common place if you look online at other clubs etc - especially where the car has been missing and untaxed to the system. I am hoping a bigger post office will have better experience if I can find one!!

As I understand it forms and documents have to be checked at a Post Office, and you need to call at a pukka PO. When I put my P6 back on the road 2 years ago, also off the road since 1973 and never on SORN, I walked into a PO, helpful lady knew all about it, processed it in a couple of minutes and sent everything of the DVLA, who responded within days. Visit a main PO is my advice.

V8 tuner supply a replacement front seal for the old cover which lets you do away with the rope seal. I fitted one to my car and it works well for little money if you are interested?

mu experience is that when the Historic exemption first came along you downloaded the form and included it in the pack sent to the DVLA or taken to the General Post Office. In following year i did the same to find that it was not necessary - indeed the tax reminder says as much and shows the amount required as zero. This has followed nor for many years for both my Rovers.

Indeed Eric, that is what happens annually. But we are talking about resurrecting a car registration that has never been on SORN and at the same time needs converting to 'Historic' designation. The service that the PO offer is to check on the spot that all the paperwork is present and correct before it goes off to DVLA and thus allows them to 'fast track' the application.

I am hoping a bigger post office will have better experience if I can find one!! I I had the exact same issue 2 month ago with my Rolls Royce which had also been stored ( Not SORN'd ) for 20 years. Agreed this cannot be done online ( YET ) albeit i am sure in time it will be actioned by DVLA so you can. I had to pay for the 6 months tax in the interim so i could legally drive the car and then my local P.O which caters for everything has a great lady in there who knows exactly what is needed to be actioned when it comes to this subject which she did for me and i had a new V5c back within 1 week with its tax code changed to Historic Vehicle and the DVLA updated my cars online tax status from 6 months to 1 year. The only thing i have still yet to get back is my refund of the initial tax i had to pay which DVLA told me last week is in the post in the form of a cheque even though i paid it via their online website on my debit card so why they simply cannot just refund it back to my card i will never know but that's the DVLA for you. Still years behind everyone else.

All got sorted today in a bigger post office that I had to queue for.
The first lady didn't know what to do and went to check, then I heard her talking to a colleague looking to direct me online. I held my ground that this could only be done in the post office when a more experienced colleague turned up who knew the drill and sorted it for me. She didn't realise I had the v5c with me. Oddly they didn't check my insurance but that's all on the motor insurance database now so dvla can check. All they had to do was write historic vehicle on the v5c, keep their half for sending on that I signed and they ticked to say no further changes ( i.e. Keepers) and gave me the other half. I gave them the mot exemption form I printed as they wanted that to.
One thing that I think helped was that a couple of years back I sent my v5 back for an address change which kind of kept my registration on notice. I didn't want to do that as I had an old green copy that I wanted to keep but I'm glad I did. At that time you could tick a box to say you wanted the original returned but they never did I guess due to fledging data protection rules then.
So I'm road legal officially after 26 years !!
Car needs a gearbox and a fresh set of tyres due to age but tentative drives will ensue as I save up!!

Removing both bumpers and door mirrors out the way in readiness for my valeter guy coming Tuesday/Wednesday to carry out a detailed machine polish enhancement and deep clean valet of the rest of the car. Its been on the agenda for a while now. Rolls Royce is away at the specialists so no better time to get my Rover done.

Head bolt sorted, it was as suspected🙂 stripped the rocker shafts down to clean them & decided they weren’t good enough to go back, stripped a few spare ones & they were even worse so I have a new set on the way. Just popped away for a bite to eat, might go back & take the gearbox out now. Should have done that before the can of fizzy pop really😆

Extracted the gearbox tonight & nearly guillotined my finger in the process, I got tangled in the fuel pipe on the way out & I dropped it & trapped my finger between the gearbox & the crossmember like a big blunt pair of scissors. All still intact though it did leak a bit & it doesn’t half knack😬
