Extracted the gearbox tonight & nearly guillotined my finger in the process, I got tangled in the fuel pipe on the way out & I dropped it & trapped my finger between the gearbox & the crossmember like a big blunt pair of scissors. All still intact though it did leak a bit & it doesn’t half knack😬 Watch those Fammies Bonny Lad

The lasses are harder too up there. Very fond memories of being posted up that way years ago. Great place and great people.

Day 2 has begun of the pro valet deep clean on my P5B saloon. She is responding brilliantly to the valeters treatments and looking splendid so far. Well worth the money too.

Put the radiator & slam panel back in today, the bonnet lock had me confuzzled for a bit but I’ve sorted it now, I tell you the parts catalogue tells you so much more than the workshop manual🙂

Took mine for a short drive around town today after having a full 2 day valet done on her last week. She drove lovely as always and gained many admiring looks and smiles. I have also ordered her a new bespoke made indoor custom car cover for her from Classic Additions who i have been buying car covers off now for many years. Should have it in about 4 weeks time along with the one i ordered for my Rolls Royce.

Fitted my new gearbox cooler pipes, what an awful job, should have waited until I had them before I dropped the engine back in. I got the short one in but I couldn’t get it to thread onto the box, I was on hours until it finally went on, the long pipe although trickier to feed in took about ten minutes. I really sickened myself this morning so I went scrapyarding to take a break & discovered a car my Dad bought new back in 1998

Went back tonight & did the tappet preloads, what a waste of money that shim kit was 😆 they were all well within tolerance but you could guarantee if I hadn’t bought the shims I would have needed them

Fitted some newly aquired car badges for my front bumper badge bar. A badge bar really sets off the front of any classic car.

Cranked it over on the starter & it pulled the oil through no bother & all the lifters rotate properly every time they come on cam. Electric fuel pump mounted, plumbed & wired properly instead of dangling on a bit of flat bar from one of the wing mounting bolts. I’ve been unable to paint my rocker covers or inlet manifold, so I’ve cleaned up my spares & popped them on so I’ll paint the others once the weather turns again & swap them back over. Just lots of fiddly bits left to do now, it’s got fuel, it’s got a spark & IT WILL be running today

The fiddly bits took way longer than they should but it runs so I’m finally happy

What have I done to my 3-litre today? Absolutely sod-all. I have been stuck at the engine-together-minus-the-gearbox for months while I:
- cut down trees - fixed the head gasket on the P3 - cleaned the Solex carb on the P3 - do what I should have done ages ago and flush the petrol line on the P3 after replacing the petrol tank bottom - restored the P3 to points ignition - removed excess grease from the P3 speedo cable and inside the speedo to stop it sticking - helicoiled a stripped thread in the blinding plate on top of the P3 gear box - replaced the lower bushes on the P4 steering idler - soldered up the leaking dry soldered joint in the P4 carb float - replaced the P4 gearbox rear seal and sleeve the pinion - replaced the P4 battery - removed the P4 starter to lubricate the starter front bush - helicoil repaired the P4 oil level sender blinding plate - replaced the P4 front brake shoes, then put the old ones back as the new ones are the wrong width - made new stand-offs for the P4 boot handle so that the boot below the license plate does not get any more bent - repaired the clocks on both the P3 and P4 - corrected the steering alignment on P3 and P4
Phew!

Extended road testing today following the engine work. Popped to one of my local scrapyards where I think I may have bought another 75, then after that I took the scenic route over to Kielder reservoir & back, mainly trouble free but it did get hot at one point, it had suffered a small water leak & just couldn’t cope with what it had left, cooled it off, topped it up & it was fine, other than that it cut out twice, the first time inexplicable but the second my little transistorised ignition device overheated & cut the spark. Thankfully I had a condenser in the glove box which was all it needed to put back to standard & get me home again. It needs a bit more time spent setting it up properly as it is a little hesitant & just not as smooth as I’d like. I took the opportunity to photograph the car at a location which I consider the birthplace of my love of Rovers. I’ll save the pic for a possible article in a future take five.

I spent the best part of 2 afternoons welding then brazing pinholes on a custom exhaust outlet...non Rover I'm afraid to say...but it does have an SD1 engine.
PS. Will heat, bend and re-angle a gearstick for a tall club member who happens to own a Morris 1100 tomorrow.
