Hi all I have bought one of JR Wadhams’ reconditioned starters. When received, the low tension terminals seem to bear no relation to those on the old one sent in, there are no markings and no wiring instructions. So I havent much choice but trial and error. Assuming I can work out where to put the main power lead from battery, which even I can manage, can I do any damage if I get the ignition leads the wrong way round? Or will it just not do anything? I also sent in the mounting bolts with the old starter motor and of course they didnt come back, so I have had to grind a slot into a bolt head. Ho hum
Help appreciated
Thanks
Steve

Steve...there should be a total of 3 terminals, in all probability a larger one that takes the heavy power lead from the battery (this is probably a 7/16" or 1/2" stud.) The other 2 terminals are most likely spade terminals, one activates the solenoid for the starter motor and the other is a 12v shunt to the coil if your car is fitted with this circuit.
If your are unsure. Mount or clamp it to a bench. Remove the battery from your car. With a set of jumper leads clamp the black lead to the body of the starter (bare metal) for a ground and atach the other end to the neg battery terminal. Attach the positive lead to the positive battery terminal and the other end to the 'large' terminal on the starter. Do not short circuit the leads!
Once this is done using a length of automotive electrical wire touch one end to the positive jumper cable and touch the other end to one of the smaller spade terminals. The terminal that activates the starter is your solenoid connection (starter wire) the other terminal is the 12v shunt.

Some solenoid caps do not have the 12v shunt terminal. Both solenoid activation and shunt terminal are soldered on 6mm male Lucars. The main battery lead terminal is a 6mm ring. Sometimes extra 8mm male Lucars are used for the other battery cables but sometimes these are rings. It depends on the year which are used and whether a ballast coil is fitted what cables are present
