Someone was kind enough to give me a complete engine and transmission from a running SD1. My P5B is already rebuild, but you can't have to many parts in stock... Anyway, the surface of most of the aluminium is corroded from storage. It's not deep corrosion - just ugly. Any tricks to get that removed besides spit and polish? I bought some reconditioned heads some time ago, which were "acid dipped" and still look very nice. Is that a way to go?
Thanks,
Jens.

depending how bad it is, I use Autosol paste, but if it is pitted it may need to be more radical.

If your going to use the engine Jens strip and dip! if not Soda Blast/Bead Blast!

Very timely question as I just got back all my parts back from being Vapour Blasted the other day and they look great. Vapour blasting is good for the softer aluminum and gasket surfaces as it doesn't abrade them (it must a little I am guessing) but they come up like new. YouTube rundown of vapour blasting was really quite inexpensive as well. Here are a few pic's:

I wanted several items Vapour/Aqua Blasted the best price I could get was £25 per item so not cheap around here, Aqua blasting alone will not remove some defects so they usually Glass Bead blast first probably good enough for Jens?
I had all my engine Acid dipped it was very low mileage but it had stood for 20 years, it ran fine but it was the best way as all the internal oil ways etc got cleared of sludge.

If it's going to be a closed engine Jens I would worry about the ingress of media, If you are just wanting it to look good on the shelf and rebuild at a later date it should be ok to blast, a light media in a low pressure sand blaster may be good enough?

It will probably sit untouched for a while, while I finish other projects like the power steering and the rear wings. My garage is good and dry, so I am not to worried about further degradation of the engine.
