Not sure if this is the right place to start but I'm gonna do it anyway. My name is Colin and I'm a serial offender when it comes to Rovers. I've owned various P6 models over the years and also many many modern 75s. I've always had a thing for the P5 though but have never actually owned one despite coming close a time or 2. I can only think it started when I was a nipper & I used to walk past a white P5B coupe (which belonged to a local butcher) on my way to & from school. Anyway to get to the point I have decided now is the time to treat myself. I have started looking seriously over the last couple of weeks and am planning to view a couple, one which is about bang on my target price & one that is quite a bit more than I would like to pay but if it's as good in the flesh then I might stretch my budget. My ideal spec is a B Coupe, not overly fussy on colour combos although I do have my favourites. I want the best I can afford with good bodywork being the main criteria, I can put up with it needing some improvement mechanically but I don't want something tired out. I think I'd be comfortable spending up to 15k. Does anyone know of anything available?

A car is only ever worth what your prepared to pay for it unless it exceeds your expectations on many areas and this is where a premium comes into effect.
Took me nearly 25 years to find the right one for me.

presumably the picture was taken while work was in progress. Personally I do not understand why a car would be painted in non standard colours, unless the owner was very keen to do it. If you are not very familiar with P5s, if you have not already done so, join the club and possibly a local member might view the car with you.

That dealer George does a lot of P5/P5B's over time. He has also been on Wheeler Dealers too but cannot remember the car the featured.
He does price is cars quite fair I think for what they are albeit a picture can be totally different to the car in the flesh.

That's not a bad looking car, I might alter my criteria a bit & go & view that More headroom in saloon than coupe in back, I always banged my head getting in and out of back seat of coupe nice looking though, would not bother me between coupe and saloon if car was right, I'd pick a good saloon over a bad coupe, I prefer the 3 litre find it more refined and quieter than V8, my favourite P5 is a MK11C. Think this one is over your stated budget, www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1973-Rover-3-5-LITRE-AUTO-COUPE/382710890462?hash=item591b58bfde:g:R9EAAOSwNmNakqsaAnother, www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rover-P5-3-5-v8-auto/333299168366?hash=item4d9a2db46e:g:PscAAOSwnLFdV9U9Two pages, 22 p5/p5b for sale and sold, www.carandclassic.co.uk/list/40/rover+p5/

First one is a bit over budget but I can maybe be flexible if he can Second one is a possible but the Manchester one looks that bit nicer. I've messaged about the Admiralty Blue one on Car & Classic but had no reply & still had no response about that metallic grey one as yet

The one in Bristol looks over priced. The one on ebay looks as if it needs some TLC The Zircon blue one on carandclassic looks really nice Generally if the wipers are parked correctly the car is worth looking at

Still no word back from any of the ones I've enquired about. The Zircon one does look quite nice, I might make enquiries...............Admiralty's my personal favourite though. I might nip down to the National at Newby Hall & have a perouse, and may even hit on lucky there if someone's looking to sell

Thanks Charlie, the green one's a bit rougher than I'd like & the other one, well I looked at the ad the other day & the bit about it won't start without a jump pack, surely at 6 grand plus he could afford to put a battery on it, it puts me right off the car to be honest. I think I'll give the other people a gentle nudge to remind them I am actually interested

The best thing you can do is in fact go to a show where you know lots of P5B's will be along with their owners to gain first hand knowledge of the marque.
Last year I spent nearly a whole day with about 20 owners and their cars who all tipped up at the Popham show in Hampshire and by god did it rejuvenate my craving to start looking for a really nice example which I sure found and bought from a fellow club member who had owned it for 18 years and bought it from the first owner who owned it for 30 years. My near 25 year search for the right car came to an end and I am overjoyed with my purchase albeit I have spent a few thousand on her already making her even better than she was when I bought her.
They are a commitment car IMHOP and you need to have some spare monies tucked away just in case as spare parts for these cars are NOT CHEAP and those who do supply parts for them have the monopoly and can pretty much charge what they like as they know all too well folk will pay the money.
Swings and roundabouts but putting all that aside they are indeed an awesome car to own today and have a cult following.

That's precisely my plan, Newby Hall is only an hour down the road for me so I think I might just be patient & wait until then, unless I get a result in the meantime

Try and do as much research FIRST before taking the plunge my friend. NEVER be rushed into buying one of these cars. You really need to take your time, gather info which will be advantageous to you when looking at examples on offer and then decide and negotiate hard until you get the right car for you at the right price your budget allows.
Just be aware in advance that these cars will ALWAYS need work doing on them at some point and for this you will need a decent cash reserve to pay for it all. LOL.
Regards

Fear not Brendan, I'm no stranger to running old cars & the on going costs associated. I've always had at least "classic" along side my daily driver at any one time
