I have just bought a 1972 P5B coupe, silver birch over admiralty blue. I have loved them ever since driving one belonging to the director of a company that I worked for back in the 70s. It's taken me a rather long time to get around to owning one !
It's in pretty good shape but I'm sure there will be a few little jobs requiring attention and that can be done over the winter months. I was surprised to find that mine has no radio fitted; despite having headrests and electric sunroof. I believe that the radio would have been located where mine has a central glove box. I plan to fit a radio of some sort but would like to know how to access the power and speaker wiring which I presume must be part of the original wiring harness. Any clues to finding it would be a great help.
Mike

Welcome to the forum mike The speaker wiring and rear speaker are not there unless you have the fader knob between the seats for the rear passenger to play with I doubt it being there is no standard radio fitted? there should be a brown wire from pin 4 on the ignition switch the bullet connector may be there somewhere? I fitted a modern radio but reverted back to the standard setup with the AM radio, grill with speaker

erm - even Rolls charged extra for a radio! From memory I think Rover charged £10 for a radio and the P5B also sported a state-of-the-art 8-track stereo player on which you might play Elvis tapes! My P5 charged £7 for the fog light! Enjoy your new acquisition and the club.

Thanks guys. I'll get my head torch on tomorrw and start groping around. It's great to have access to people who have experience of these cars.

Here are some pictures of the factory mounting radio and speaker.

Thanks Ken. Those pictures are really helpful. My car has an aerial on roof (although has no radio) Do you think there will be a cable somewhere from the aerial ?

There should be a cable behind the dash somewhere from the roof antenna. I'd hunt around under there. The factory center radio panel replaces the middle cubby hole wood door and I'd try to get one from David Green or elsewhere (he scraps P5's out) or else check eBay or ask on the Forum. There is a sideways "Z" shaped bracket that mounts the radio to the stainless steel piece, and then is screwed up to the dashboard bracket with a long machine screw.

I am a strong advocate of hiding the modern modifications where possible. Since you have a central glove box, you could hide a modern multi-media system there. Speakers can go UNDER the rear parcel shelf and behind the panels at the back of the front parcel tray. I wrote about my version some time ago. I will see if I can find it. Here you go: roverp5.proboards.com/thread/9559/radio-sound-quality

Thanks. Great information guys. I think I am going to go for something modern out of site behind the the central glove box cover. The speaker location options vey useful djm16. As for the bristol406 - no I don't have one. Maybe just wishful thinking on my part.

Now that’s interesting, I assumed there would be a small oblong & 2 round holes for the old thumper button radio to poke through and it be secured by the nuts behind the twiddly knobs. My original had been badly butchered to take a modern radio so I got a replacement only to find a large oblong hole in it but if this is the norm then I’ll have a go at fitting it...............I’ve been wanting to use my javelin ambassador in something for years

I guess that there would be if you have the black speaker grille in the centre. Mine never had a radio and therfore has a wood veneered lid same as the side glove box.

The aerial cable should come down the left hand front screen pillar, then to the underside of the facial frame, thus:

Found it ! It even has a connector fitted.
Haven't found the power lead from the ignition switch yet, I may have to expose the switch.
