Hello, I'm restoring my P5 3 litre Coupe 1964 Mark 11 C, has any one found a good source for a wiring diagram? At the moment I am using the Lucas wiring codes but would like a good P5 diagram. There seem to be lot for P5B's. Rob

Hello, I was afraid of that, I have to use a magnifying glass to read the manual diagram and there is a bigger one in my copy of the Autobooks Owners Workshop Manual. It looks like I will have to do it the hard way. I have taken the instrument panel off and labeled where every thing goes. I notice some one has been there before me as there is unsheathed wires. Does the P3 coupe come standard with a flasher unit? Before taking the pod off the panel lights did not work. They all have bulbs in. I am trying to see if they are like Xmas tree lights if one bulb goes out does this prevent them all coming on? Is there some one in the club who is a wiring expert and willing to be pestered? Rob

A suggestion which might help. Take the handbook to somewhere with a large copier and have it enlarged onto, say, A3.

Hello, I was wondering about getting a diagram enlarged. I was hoping for a full colour copy but looks like no-one has created one yet. Rob

Well you’re not too far away from me, I’m not familiar with the P5 electrical system YET as I’ve only had one a couple of months, but they aren’t complicated & I’m not scared of wires, I’ve sorted one or two little issues with my dash lights, wipers etc. already

Is this what you're looking for? Copies from the 3 litre WSM.

Yes there should be an indicator unit. It commonly fails and would have been replaced typically with a more reliable electronic unit. It should be somewhere in the dash pod.
re panel lights, there are two sets: there are 4 tiny bulbs that look like they came from a model railway. These backlight the switches. They are prone to overheating, melting their plastic mounts, and short circuiting. They are each powered independently. The other panel lights are those in the speedometer and tacho. They are also powered independently, but may have a common earth, which if it is not secure will cause both not to light. If the clock light is also not working, then I would suspect the dimmer switch instead. These commonly go open circuit, and can be bypassed.

Hi all, thanks for the help. When I took the instrument cluster off, to refurbish it, I just removed the rings holding the switches to it so all the wiring is attached to the switches as they should be. I was going to work through all the bulbs to see if they are functional. But from the information you have supplied I will see if the earth is not working. I was going to check the power to the switch to see if it is there. I am a bit reticent to power everything up while the cluster is removed incase there is a short. Also in the past some one has added a none OEM indicator headlight flasher switch and wired it in. I have purchased a new Lucas OEM indicator headlight flasher unit for a P5 3litre and was wanting a wiring diagram to help me wire it in correctly. The one that is in is a more complicated unit and has more wires than the original. Rob

You mean the flasher unit? The 3 pin electromechanical unit is simple to wire up. There is no earthing required. Towing units have an extra terminal for the trailer warning lights. Electronic units have an earth terminal for both standard and trailer versions

Hi Phil, on the right hand side of the steering column is the indicator stalk, ( some people refer to them as flashers). I have picked up that it is referred to as the direction indicator and head light flasher switch. On my car there was an incorrect one fitted. It does not fit the column and it does not have the contact that touches the brass ring on the column. It also has a thicker stalk than the original. I am thinking it was from a later model but do not know P5's well. I have access to the original lucas parts book and was able to buy a NOS one. The NOS one has less wires than the one fitted and it has those bullet connectors. So I was hoping for Rover P5 3 litre wiring diagram that would say which coloured wire goes where. The only clues I have is that Lucas have codes that say where they go. (Dark green Red is direction indicator switch to left hand flasher lamps) As you might guess I don't want to damage the very expensive NOS switch by wiring it incorrectly. Rob

Sorry for late response - I have been sidetracked by my retirement process that completed just now like BREXIT. There were different switches, the Lucas colour codes are correct so connect up as per those G/R is Left G/W is right and the other is to the Flasher can L terminal. The later cars had the headlamp flasher facility in the switch with 2 extra wires.
Yours should have the Headlamp flasher though so your NOS version is for a Mk1 - all the P5 and P5B switches looked very similiar but there a 3 different types that are not fully interchangeable

Hi Phil, thanks for the help. The nice thing about being retired is I can work on my car every day. Rob
