Evening all....I'm just getting my P5B back up and running (again) after a lay-up and relocation - I recently rebuilt the carbs and tried grose jet float valves which seem to have cured a problem with the old ones sticking shut, and non-starting. I can get the carbs balanced and tuned and what seems a fairly healthy tickover, but when I select a gear the revs seem to drop a lot more than usual. To get a reasonable tickover speed in gear I need to set it so it's racing in neutral. Also today I noticed some juddering/struggling in reverse. Is there something obvious I'm missing? - Kickdown adjustment or anything? The car's not on the road, just in and out of the garage. It has HIF6 carbs so I guess a P6 kickdown setup. Thanks in advance for any tips!

I had a similar problem with the HIF6s on my P6 after I completely rebuilt the cars not long ago. Turned out that the jet spindles were sticking. They have machined grooves around them - seems they are not smoothed off so there are lips left from machining, corrected with fine emery cloth. Might be something else of course, so as well to start with checking the kick-down cable adjuster setting before dismantling anything

A big drop in RPM when selecting gear is normally a sign that the mixture is weak.

I agree Harvey, which is what happens when the jet sticks in an HIF6.

Thanks for the replies Harvey and Sam... Next time I get a chance to tinker, I will check the mixture again and the jet spindles......
