Another thought. It should be possible to split the nuts off using a sharp cold chisel, taking care not to damage the threaded parts onto which they screw. Replacement nuts used to be available from a well-known midlands Rover specialist.

The nuts are brass - if Stilsons will not break the bond then a freshly sharpened thin chisel will split them

I had a problem when I did mine recently, David did not have any. So looked on ebay and found that ANG do them, not advertised for the P5 as they are common on several cars of that era. I can honestly say that I cannot tell the difference when I compare them to an old one I have.

I had the same trouble with an MG Midget, because the nuts are octagonal an ordinary socket will not get a good purchase on them, I made a spanner out of a piece of flat steel strip which gripped on all 8 sides, this got them off, I would have thought an MG parts dealer would be the cheapest place to get replacements.
