Making use of our Covid-19 lockdown to further my rolling restoration. Today's project was to remove the rear bumper to paint the inside with hamerite silver which has degenerated into pulling out the battery box to repaint it and tidy up some wiring. This was prompted by deciding to remove the tow bar the car came with as she will not be towing again. Anyway to return to the subject of the thread, I have a few choices of colour for the bumper irons and mounting brackets. The mounting brackets look like they were originally the colour of the car for the bit that can be seen and the bit inside the chassis bare metal. I will stretch to paint for the whole bracket but the surface rust was pretty minimal for 54 years! The support brackets are a bit harder to tell as I think they have had a torch taken to them to repair some accident damage some time in the past. So, can anyone tell me what colour these should be? My default would be satin black for all but if possible then I would like to go back to the original colour scheme.
Thanks
Martin

I agree, chassis black. Inside the bumpers, rather than Hammerite, I suggest using a 2-pack DTM epoxy etching primer (with the emphasis on etching). Ideally, you would mask the chrome outside and sand blast it first to get to the bottom of the rust, and to provide a key for the paint. Then coat over it with Waxoyl.
If however there is already a good and unbroken chrome layer, then you would be better off just waxoyling it.

I did my bumper back 23 years ago with silver Hammerite and it is still in great condition in saying this the rear was totally free from any rust or residue left from the plating process, I used an etch primer then 2k Satin Black on the irons but chassis black on all the subframe and suspension.

Your just showing off now John. LOL.
Yes good olde satin black on mine too. Too many episodes of Wheeler Dealers with Edd China and his obsession with Satin Black did it for me. If we are all wrong we can blame Edd. LOL

Those suspension parts do look very smart John. I am after a very tidy look for the time being and reducing further deterioration rather than concourse. The irons and mounting brackets look nice in satin epoxy enamel. I have run out of paint so the front will have to wait until after the lockdown. I also went with Hammerite inside the bumper and overiders. The bumper has been rechromed at some stage and the inside must have been rust free as it still is. There is some evidence of a repair so perhaps it needed straightening. The rechrome was over the original chrome on the inside so it was a bit peely. The paint has stuck the edges down. The overiders were quite rusty on the inside however someone had used either waxoyl or fisholine and that seems to have stopped any further corrosion. I scraped this out, killed the rust with phosphoric acid and painted these with Hammerite too.
All back together now and I much prefer the look of the rear without the towbar. As part of this work I have pulled the spare wheel holder out, tidied it up and recoated the underseal, pulled the diff out and checked the clearance. Not bad to still be at 7 thou after 150k miles. Also replaced the driveshaft universals, painted the driveshaft gloss black and the axle in satin. The underseal has has a freshen up from the axle back, now onto the wheel arches and the rest of the underbody.
I had planned on replacing the pinion seal however the leak from the axle was due to the drain plug only being finger tight!. It must have been like this for a long time as the accumulated dirt and oil I scraped off filled about a quarter of a bucket. I think one of the previous owners must have lived on a gravel road as I think if I had saved the rest of the mud and gravel that has been hosed, blown and water blasted mainly from the nooks and crannies around the rear of the car, the rest of the bucket would have been filled. Thankfully this doesn't seem to have resulted in much rust, if any.
Cheers Martin
