Hello lovely Rover people
Firstly, to say that I am getting to the end of my Rover restoration, have done the interior, exterior, engine from inlet manifold upwards and all ancillaries, full suspension rebuild. I am a total novice, have never done this before and the amazing support I have had on this forum (together with the workshop manual) have got me through it so THANK YOU!
Now on a more mundane level...
I have an oil leak from the speedo to gearbox interface
The workshop manual only shows one oil seal, which is inside the housing and (on mine) looks to be fine. But intriguingly the last para on page 442 says “if the driven gear...has been withdrawn...replace the oil seal beneath the adaptor”. The adaptor is basically the knurled knob that screws onto the housing and the manual shows no oil seal within that knurled knob. Should there be one there? Mine doesn’t have one, although there are some marks that suggest there may have been one there at some point
Does anyone have a view on what should be there?
I thank yew...

It would not hurt to fit a seal if you have one to see if it cures the leak or not. Regards,

As this is in the 3.5 litre section I am assuming it is the 3.5 with BW35 box fitted. The drive pinion has two seals, one is the " O " ring on the pinion body itself and the other which is the shaft seal is within the housing. You will need to remove the pinion body complete ( 1X 7/16 bolt ) and remove it from the tail housing. The O ring will be either on the pinion body or stuck in the tail housing. The pinion oil seal can be accessed by removing the brass insert on the pinion body. You might have to grind down a spanner to fit it. Unusual to have fluid leaking from this seal as it high up, how is your fluid level on the dipstick ? Well done on your project so far, we love pictures here

Thank you for that - I hadn’t noticed the flat on the brass part, will take it apart (and yes confirming it is a 68 p5B coupe)
Yes I thought the same about the levels, I may well have overfilled the gear box because I poured in the amount that was specified in the workshop manual but having read a lot on the forum I think it takes a while to find its way around the system (esp as I havent run the engine yet) so it is effectively over filled till it settles. It does seem to have slowed and should have spurted out when I took out the speedo gear if it was that high. But that is definitely where the leak was from. Im lucky enough to have a four poster ramp so can examine it easily.
I have thousands of pics, I have noticed some posts about “how to post pics” and dont want to get it wrong so will do my homework. I will put a good selection on when it is finished
