A couple of questions. Was a roof aerial the only option for the P5 series, did they ever have them on the wings? Is it reasonably easy to fit the wires etc to the roof type without damaging fifty year old roof lining?.

I think roof ariels were standard fit unless specified otherwise by the original buyer. The radio was indeed an option though. The only P5/P5B ive ever seen with wing mounted whips is on Maggie Thatchers car in Gaydon Museum and they were for the Met Police radio. Of course it is your car and you can mount an ariel where ever you like. You could choose to have one of those inside window stick on types that were quite popular back in the day and very easy to fit and remove.
My plastic ring around the base of mine has broken off half and gone with the wind somewhere sadly but she is all tight and secure. To get at the bolted base you will have to remove the roof lining down by looks of things. I aint touching mine though as its original and mint.
I can live with it. I did remove the mast the other day though and polished it all up and lightly greased the inner mast. All fine now and shiney. Just be aware if you do remove your mast off its mount the screw is spring loaded so undo it slowly and be prepared to catch it. LOL
Regards,

I hadnt thought of one of the interior type, might be an idea, pretty much period. I dont really want to pull the headlining about. Thanks for the suggestion.

No need to pull the headlining about - there header panel is removable and the is a recess in the header rail to bolt the aerial on. There is even a string to pull the cable down the n/s screen pillar on some models!
Wing mounted aerials were never a Rover practice

Expanding on what Phil has said, the small front panel is between the screen and the main head lining. You remover the sun visors and their clips and the mirror, then it should come down. Here is a photo, the panel comes rearwards up to roughly where the felt roof lining starts.

The roof ariel is the easy way out! Even the stickons have to have cabling hidden and are not as good for reception. Wing mounting is a no go and asking for trouble

All i need now then is a new spare plastic base ring for mine then. Do not think they will be available on there own though.

Ive just ordered one. If its OK when it arrives I'll send you a link. I find the bit about a string in the screen pillar fascinating. If there is one I would in some way be reluctant to pull it out, history and all that.

No string! I did find a previous owner had a sealant gun for Christmas and had managed to glue the trim to the sealing rubber with it. Its about as flexible as an RSJ and had to be chipped off. It took me all day, just waiting for the aerial to arrive now,I managed to slip a nylon cord behind the dash etc ready.

Thanks. Finished the job, biggest problem was fitting trim back that had distorted when removed sometime in the past and working out what were the correct holes to screw into where someone had drilled new ones. Pleased with the aerial, only £11 delivered from classic car accessories in manchester, identical to ones on ebay at over double the price. The radio is an old casette player type thats been in the shed in the 'that will come in handy one day' pile. A modern unit would look a bit out of place. Will post some pictures later.

Radio in place. A bit bulky and old fashioned but I thought a modern one would look odd. The panel had already been cut and altered and I didnt want to make it any worse. The wires and under dash panel are now tidied up. Im pleased with the aerial,
