I am trying to remove a front window regulator on my P5B coupe without removing the window frame. I have the glass held securely captive in the up position using bands of duct tape over the frame. I have removed the 4 screws holding the crank and spring to the door and the 2 screws holding the pivot to the door. I can reach in and grab hold of all parts of the mechanism but the end of the arm which extends from the pivot seems to be firmly attached to something and won't budge. When I move it, the glass moves. As I am working blind and haven't seen a regulator out of the car, I've no idea how it connects to the glass. Has anyone done this and seen how the arm connects to the glass ?
The manual glibly says "remove the screws and withdraw the regulator through the large aperture in the panel". Just like that !

The glass sits in a steel with felt channel that grips, and I mean grip hard, the glass at the bottom. you need some penetrating fluid or better still the foamy spray that is used on CV joint rubbers to ease the glass out. I think it is some of the earlier models have a nut and bolt or pin and split pin arrangement on the channel to the mechanism but in most cases they are rivets. It is better to remove the channel off the glass otherwise disconnect the channel from the mechanism.
Even getting the whole assembly out of that hole is a challenge!

Many thanks for that Chuck. I will try some penetrating fluid and a bit of force and try to avoid self injury on the sharp panel edges.

If you need any I have a box of window regulator parts here. However I do know there is a difference between front door saloon and Coupe' regulators but what it is and what I have is a different storey! The toothed gear is always the first to wear out.

Reburbishing the regulator seems like a distant dream at the moment. Although I have managed to release the long arm of the regulator from the window the regulator still seems to be attached directly above the pivot. Also, the crank and the spring have managed to wedge themselves into an immovable position. I may have to resort to cutting a hole in the door !

I do hope that your last comment was a jest!! Odd as once I had mine released from the window mechanism, which was a pain, they were relatively easy to remove from the door.

I will do battle again tomorrow. Hopefully I won't run out of options and have to resort to the cutting wheel.

Ive done both front doors. I found that putting the handle back on temporarily and winding about half way when the glass has been removed made it easier to get the mechanism out.

How did you you remove the glass ? It seems to be firmly attached to regulator.

I used a blunted thin wood chisel inserted under the glass and levering it up. Steady light pressure eased it up and out. I was told afterwards that sliding the glass backwards and forwards should seperate the glass complete with support from the frame.

The glass seems to sit in a horizontal channel at the bottom. Do you remove glass from the channel or does the channel stay with the glasss. I can't seem to seperate the regulator from that bottom channel .

Channel from regulator but it will be easier if the glass comes off the channel as rubber U section has perished

I eventually got some refurbished regulators and had a local body shop install them for me. However, one of them is still quite stiff to wind up the window. The refurbished regulators were well lubricated when I received them and I have lubricated the window guides with silicon spray. Is there any form of adjustment that might improve the window movement ?
