Hi Everyone.
Can't find anything exactly matching my query on the boards.
My 50 year old Rover's boot seal needs removing and replacing. The rubber has deteriorated and distorted (obviously old/or botched refit) and is like a dry sponge and dried liquorice in places! (sorry about the analogies!).
Any advice on cleaning the remaining hard gunk of the boot lip please?
Cheers
Andy

I would recommend Innotec Seal and Bond Remover 04.0107 Technical Cleaner. Available online with free delivery. It is a German product which I have found to be very effective. I recently stripped ALL seals from my car and this worked a dream. Spray on, leave for about 10 minutes so to soften up the sealant. I use heavy duty plastic scrapers, Google - Adhesive weights scraper set plastic scraper seal remover. I have no connection with the brands mentioned!

I use an old pen knife for that sort of job. If the paint underneath is old and hard it probably will not go down to bare metal and the new rubber will cover it up ! I have a Scotts rubber around my boot and am very pleased with it.

Thanks George.
I didn't easily find a distributor, nor delivery cheaper than the solvent product! Managed to source it from Ebay(!).
Hope I don't need a penknife to scrape off the gunk after!

Update on boot seal replacement.New boot rubber seal now fitted! Some aspects easier than others, as commented on by many members previously. The Innotec solvent is only for trade (12 cans +delivery ) but Ebay distributor; one tin, delivered-£18- Result! Was not as 'magical' at removing rubber or glue as I'd hoped. White spirit was better on the softer smudged bits, after using the aerosol solvent. Hope to re-adjust the catch tomorrow. The seal, obviously as new manufacture and retrofitted doesn't 'hug' the corners as well as I would like. Took a few boot closures to 'reform' to fit, without the lid pushing the seal out of the internal panel 'lip'. at the hinges' side. Hoping it will settle in and not have to glue at all. Of course I don't want the boot popping open on the road either!( like the other week coming back from Cornwall). Hadn't even touched it before that?! Is the front opening edge rubber supposed to be flat/flush to the car body or like a 'shelf ', horizontally , as it's tight in the ridge at the catch side? Does the 'wedge' catch plate locator need adjusting also, anyone? Thanks folks. Andy

It is some years since I did mine, so struggling to remember what I did. I had a new seal from a UK source and it did not begin to fit so I chucked it away and bought a scotts. Much better but no formed corners. Put the new seal in place and covered the top corners with newspaper which I slowly pulled out as I pushed the lid down, helped form the corners. Left the lid down for a couple of weeks (winter job) then opened it and the corners had formed. Then stuck it down with Araldite. Did not adjust the lock and was soon closing as nicely as it had done before and no more fumes into the car interior !

Thanks.
I'm hoping for the same result as from your experience! Fingers crossed.

Fitted mine last year as pretty much the same method as George did on his albeit mine is glued on all round. No issues. I just need to be brave enough to do all 4 door seals too but TBH i cannot really be bothered so they will stay in the box for now.

I know the feeling!! If i am honest i dont do the miles per year in my Rover to justify the need to do my door seals as an urgent job. The wind noise through them whilst on the move is pretty quiet and i dont jet wash her as she never really gets dirty to warrant a water wash thus why my door seals are staying where they are in a cool dry box in there wrappers away from the light. A job for the new owner to do if i ever sell her.

I also bought a drivers side door seal. NOT looking forward to that! But, as you say, if it doesn't leak if you're caught out driving in wet weather or washing it, no urgency to replace.

I just had a peek at the pack of the front door seals, bought from Wadhams.
It has 5 pieces, all different profiles. Is this correct for the P5B coupe?
Presume ALL 5 pieces will require gluing too?
Ta.
