I realise that this is a little over the top! Perhaps I am subconsciously avoiding the day when I will have to start re-mounting the engine? Anyway, I have put up a little video on Youtube on preparing the screws retaining the hump by the steering column to the firewall. Video

I'd say yes David, you are obsessive...but you're in like minded company. I did note that not all the screw head slots were pointing due north.

I like the matt black/satin finish in engine bays Sam (no matter what the manufacturer did originally) The engine and it's ancilliaries then become the primary visual focus when the bonnet is opened especially if they're well presented. I'm always amazed by a set of new but messy spark plug leads layed over the top of an engine like loose spaghetti...in my view counter to an overall, well presented engine bay.

"I did note that not all the screw head slots were pointing due north."
Well neither are Sam's. But if I go back and change that now, it will spoil the paint finish. Aargh, indecision.
But I have a deeper problem. I stripped and repainted the heater box in what was supposed to be "low gloss black". It turned out full gloss. What I should have done of course was to flat it back and start over. What I have done is to fully re-assemble it. So what do I do now? Leave it as-is, try to paint around the shiny newly zinc plated parts, take it all apart again to do properly?

The heater box should be covered in a special heat resistant, insulation fabric, so don’t worry about the paint!
I see Wadhams have them in stock, P5INTCOV1.

Judging by mine the factory did not bother to line up the slots, just done up as tight as necessary, as have I. I did think of it though!!

was taught that screw and bolt slots were vertical so allow the rain water to drain out

I was hoping that with the bonnet in place it would keep the rain out!

I have seen heater box covers on P5Bs, was there really one on the 3-litre MkIIb? I can't see any evidence that mine had one.

I don't believe that my 1966 3-litre Mk IIC P5 Coupe had the heater cover either.
