If it is the 3 pin Lucas then the warning lights are fed from the P terminal and earth via the opposing side's indicator bulbs. Some other later electronic types both 4 & 5 pin and the 2 pin clicker Lucas earth directly from the warning lights. The wiring diagram does show the correct position which reflects the standard Lucas wiring of the period. The 3 pin Lucas unit must not be dropped and should be securely mounted horizontally or vertically. They do fail partially in the warning light terminal P or the Indicator L terminal. It is important the connections are correct. The supply is Ignition switch is B. The nearest correct unit is here www.holden.co.uk/p/lucas_35020_12_volt_flasher_unit_with_lucar_connectors Later 2 pin Electromechanical and 4 or 5 pin Electronic units can be fitted but minor wiring mods are required for the warning lights. Note most electronic units are Negative Earth but do give a more consistent flash but may not be as reliable with Dynamo charged systems This topic has cropped up many times over the years (and I have given more detail) so if you want more options use SEARCH

David, the indicator bulbs in the instrument pod fit into a plastic sleeve, and they are grounded by a thin metal strip (kind of arrow shaped) that slides over the plastic and grounds to the bulb as it is inserted. These can fall out of place and leave you with a poor ground that flashes dimly both bulbs as you describe. Mine did so and this was the problem.

These do not ground through the bulbholder on UK models till the 2 pin flasher version arrived in the 70s. They can be modified so that they do but the warning light terminal on 3 pin flasher units will not work as intended
