I purchased a set of new interior lights a couple of years ago and they are of the newer type in that the back plate which holds the switch assembly is black plastic rather than the original style which has a metal and composite back plate. The switch assembly in this newer type seems quite flimsy. I connected one of the lamps and after a few seconds I could detect burning plastic smell and sure enough the plastic around the switch assembly was hot and had melted badly. I disconnected immediately, reconfirmed that I had connected it correctly and scratched my head!
Looking at the switch mechanism, it is not very impressive and I was able to change the measured resistance between the fixed and moveable metal parts of the switch by applying varying amounts of hand pressure. It seems to me that these are potentially quite dangerous as if there is a variable resistance due to movement or just due to the original quality of manufacture, then when a high resistance occurs, the switch assembly will get hot and potentially could cause a fire.
For now at least I do not plan to fit these and I am looking to see if I can renovate my old ones.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?
