I have just finished repainting the front wings of my P5B after stripping to bare metal. When I purchased the car the wings and wing bottoms had been finished in black underseal or similar and then overpainted with satin black. I already have the satin black which I know is the correct final finish for these areas. But should they also be painted with a textured underseal? I know that might be a wise move from the point of longevity but I prefer originality. It is about 40 years since I had a P5B in original condition and I just cannot remember what the factory finish was for these areas. Advice gratefully received!

Many thanks. As I rather suspected. Now I have the task of stripping off the underseal from the sills - deep joy!

A heat gun will remove it in seconds - a blowlamp will take off the underlying paint as well! You may not like what you find underneath

Thanks Phil. Heat gun located and ready to start! It had not occurred to me to try a heat gun - in the past I have resorted to a mixture of paint strippers, solvents and scrapers, none of which were particularly quick or easy.
The good news is that the sills have been replaced in quite recent years and have every appearance of the work having been done well, so hopefully none of the usual horrors will be lurking beneath the paint and underseal. We shall see...

A heat gun is great for removing the rubbish Rover underseal quickly and safely as it will not catch fire or spread asbestos fibres
