Hello everyone. I know this has been discussed before and after lots of research here and on the web I am now rather confused... My car (1969 P5B Coupe) is in for a total paint job and i supplied the body shop with what I thought was the correct paint codes (Bordeaux 030 4890 body and Silver Birch P030 4891 roof) but the roof colour is way off, metallic and very silvery (is that a word?) rather than the flat grey/white that it was. Unfortunately the whole car is now in primer so they cant scan the old colour any longer. :-( So my question is, is this the wrong code, or was it never actually Attachment Deletedsilver birch to begin with?? any help or pointers would be much appreciated. Many thanks Neil.

I recently had a paint job and came across the same problem. There are several versions of Silver Birch out there, including one for the later Rover models. I will check the code and supplier of mine as several senior members of the Club have seen it and approved. but not before Friday.

It should be a non metallic pale grey. Sam should be able to let you have the code.
I think that John said that Navistar Grey TSA NAV 8634 is a fairly good match.
The later silver birch metalic was used on Austin / Rover

We had a 1968 Silver Birch saloon in 1995- 2001.
It had been recently restored in resprayed in it original Silver Birch 2 pack as was the only way to do at the time. It was extremely smart and glossy for a few years but when I came to repair dents and scratches that developed and rust breakthrough no standard Rover colour matched well enough. I ended up tinting it myself to match and even then it aged differently.
Rover certainly never used metallic as their antiquated paint system could not cope till the BLMC SD1 new paint shop and that failed disastrously
Optical matching was not available in the 1990s but it gives great results now but only if you have the original swatch to scan . Even then the paint will age differently and unless the whole car is resprayed then it will show up sooner than later
As mentioned Silver Birch name was used by quite a few car makes and they are all different

I would urge care with regard to Rover Group Silver Birch. This is likely to be one of the later colours with the same name, possibly the metallic you already have. Sam should come up with the correct colour code. If not, I have a small amount of cellulose somewhere and if I can find it (!!) could airbrush some on to a small piece of steel and send it to you. You could then get your local paint supplier to scan it. I feel sure, though, that somebody on here will know the correct paint code.

Just forget the name Silver Birch and all the old codes as George says I had my roof scanned for the purpose of finding a modern substitute

p5andrew I think is correct, it is the later Rover aka BL version, actually a light grey which is somewhat darker than the P5 colour

The mixing code as Eric says went out years ago that's why I had my roof scanned as a reference for those who need it Navistar Grey TSA NAV 8634

Ah, so do we think that this is the definitive and nearest to the original then? Ill pass this on to the paint shop to do some spray outs.
Many thanks for all your help chaps, much appreciated!
Neil.

Ive just realised that the 4891 code is the one I started with that came out metallic and very silverish, nothing like your photo which looks bang on! I am now totally confused...

All I cab say is that several longstanding members have seen my car, including our chairman, and all think it correct. I am quoting the code off the tin the paint came in.

Absolutely it does. Im going to check with the body shop because the spray test they did looked more like gun metal and was metallic!
