Can anyone decipher what is meant by the Jaw and Stop in the P5 3 litre manual gearbox selector mechanism. It is reference d in the workshop manual together with a clearance that has to be set. It is shown in paragraph 34 in the attached picture from the workshop manual.
The picture opens up the correct way when you click on it.

David, judging from the number of replies you've received it looks like no one really knows what Rover meant by that paragraph. When I rebuilt and reset my gearshift selector bushings and rod and selector lever (all of which are external to the actual gearbox) I just used trial and error to get everything correct. I did have some difficulty getting it adjusted so that reverse and 4th gear would both go into gear fully and not come out of gear occasionally. It seems the amount movement of the gear lever is limited by the remote selector and it's a balance between enough movement in each direction in the remote housing for those two gears. Eventually I seemed to get it right, and it has also worked itself in nicely with use, so no problems now. I did not open up the gearbox cover to adjust the internal selector shafts at all.

Thanks Ken for the thoughts on this.
In my case, when I am engaging 2nd gear, there is a sort of grinding sound similar to the sound you get when selecting first when the car is moving. Obviously in that case it is because of a lack of synchromesh, but in changing to second gear it should be quiet. I am suspecting that the clearance as shown in the manual is not correct and so am going to adjust it to the Work Shop Manual spec.

Wow, that sounds like the synchromesh on 2nd could be worn out, which seems unlikely with only 61,000 miles on the car, and especially if it worked OK before. Hopefully it is just an adjustment. Let us know what you find the answer to be.

The following is FYI only, but on the P6 & P6B manual boxes, the same symptoms are often caused by the rear flange nut being loose. It is often accompanied in that application by a wavering speedo.
