Hi
1966 P5 3 litre MKIII
Can someone tell me where the timing marks are? Couldn't see any pointer or reference point near the crankcase pully. Is it on the flywheel?
Just carried out a carb rebuild, cleared blocked vacuum line, checked distributor vacuum module pulls in under vacuum and that centrifugal weights are free.
Was going to set static ignition timing so need markers. Is it 3deg (using 97 fuel)?
Also noticed that the distributor advance return springs are of different gauges. Is this right or has someone fitted the wrong spring (maybe one they had to hand!). I suspect it might not be the original distributor as the vacuum connection isn't threaded to take the vacuum line but would instead take a plastic tube (someone has put a small piece of plastic tube between the vacuum module and the metal vacuum line). Distributor is marked Lucus 41915A 4506 2485.
Many thanks

If I remember right, the timing marks are on the flywheel. There is a cover that needs to be opened on either the upper right or left shoulder of the flywheel housing that you can shine a timing light into to check the timing.

On my LHD MkIIC 3-litre Coupe the timing marks are on the passenger (right) side of the engine with a cover on the bell housing that is unscrewed to view them.

The timing marks on Mk3s are on the front pulley - on flywheel on all others.
The springs are meant to be different and plastic vac pipe is a quite usual retrofit

Thanks for the replies.
As it's a Mark III I'm assuming that the timing marks are on the crankshaft pulley. Can anyone be more specific about the location. Are they on the damper or the belt pulley? I've cleaned the rust off of the edge and face of the damper and can't see any marks at all. More confusingly I can't see any sign of anything that could be used as a reference point to align any marks. The workshop manual shows a pointer (in the engine section referring to valve timing) pointing to a mark on the damper but I can't see this pointer on my car.
There is a cover missing from the bottom of the auto gearbox which I've looked through but all I can see is the starter ring (no plain surface where there could be any marks) so I can't see how the marks can be on the flywheel.
...........so I'm a bit confused!
Thanks

Hi, The timing marks are stamped in to the outer surface(the part you are looking down on)on the damper pulley. 2 different locations as I remember - 3 degrees before TDC and 106 degrees. They are not stamped that deep so a real good wire brushing will be needed.
