The later V8 Lockheed booster is a much better choice. Simpler, more effective, very reliable and long lasting if new one purchased. Recon ones do not stay the course anywhere near as long

Just to recap, I’ve got my Rover back and the braking system working very well. The old Servo was eventually replaced with the later Lockheed unit; a bracket had to be made up, the garage made a very neat job. The master cylinder was replaced as well as the two front hydraulic hoses, one was almost completely blocked. One thing I was going to ask, it seems silly after owning this car for so many years but is the brake action on the pedal on a Rover 3 litre a bit soft? I find the pedal goes down quite a long way and gives me a very gentle braking action but a bit further down gives the car a very good stopping effect. I’m just wondering if it needs more bleeding or if it’s just inherently like this.

Cannot answer for the 3 litre, but for the 3.5 the answer would be no. It is a difficult system to bleed and the problem is usually the rear cylinders, which I hope also have new seals and flexible hose.

However compared to modern cars the action is more progressive and controllable IMHO. Overall the brakes are very good If you think travel is too much then air remains in the system often the Servo - the Servo outlet must point upwards slightly and the rear cylinders must float

What the pedal feels like is highly dependent on the servo, (and whether the engine is running). With the engine turned off, the pedal should be pretty hard, and not descend more than an inch or two with heavy pressure. It should also not pump up, if it does, then chances are there is still air in the system.

Thanks for the reply's, after reading them and taking the car out a couple of times I'm of the option there is air in the system. It feels safe and will brake very well but there is just too much travel on the pedal. It will have to go back in the new year to be sorted out.
