Well having said " the short" was fixed I plugged in the clock; it's back. djm16 mentioned the clock being notorious. At the moment the black wire is attached so its touching the case. (see photo) Is this wrong? Shouldn't the case be isolated from all wires? An easy fix but if not I will need to have a look inside. Attachments:

The case should be earthed

Hi an update on my Kienzle. I found that the case was live. That is there was continuity from the purple, live wire to the case. I had to do what I didn't want to and open her up to find the purple wire had been in contact with the case causing it to short. I have now wrapped the purple with heat shrink and hope this gives the wire some integrity. I will also be isolating the connection point to the interior workings to prevent contact with the case.
