Time for a major reworking of the working space.

If the bonnet release isn't returned all the way home or if there is any kind of object fowling the linkage at the grille where it turns at right angles to actuate the latch then it will pop open when the body twists in a turn or if you bounce along and things twist or flex.

Indeed! The handle wasn't completely home, and the wind was quite high, so I suspect you are correct. Happily the secondary catch held well. I had the bonnet of a car fly up on me when I was a teenager with my first car, and I sure don't want that to ever happen again...

Now that we know the 'where', may we also hear about the 'what was done to Winston story', and by whom here in Australia? Any tips for P5B-enthusiastic mechanics locally always gratefully received. Thomas, Vince (Enigmas) did a huge amount of recommissioning work on Winston late last year and early this year. He did an extensive blog on this forum about it. I think it was called "Mikes-a-loon -Saloon". It's a good read. I have just put a comment on it to bump it up the "recent posts" list so you can find it. Take the time to read it, there's a lot in there.

Good to know the trip home was largely uneventful. I'm glad you were alert when the bonnet "unlatched" itself Mike! That sort of incident is very upsetting and like you, I've been there and done that but with my MG Magnette many years ago. 😉

Attachment DeletedSnover! After a brief sojourn outside on a cold day, Winston is reminded that his time as an Aussie Beach Bum are far behind him... Currently back inside with heater gently melting the ice away.

Good luck with the freezing weather Mike. It's a weather condition I try and avoid. Make sure you've got a good mix of glycol in Winston's coolant, you don't want to inadvertently crack the block if he ever has to spend the night outside. 👍

Good morning from Downunder Mike. It'll be a mild, blue-skied and sunny 23 C in Melbourne today. With Christmas festivities closing in, the severe winter weather in your locale and I'm presuming a holiday break from work, I'm wondering if there's some allocated Winston focused time available primarily to pull the sump off and clean out the years of accumulated crud that will have certainly congealed in the base of the pan under the oil pump pickup. No pressure.😉 👍 Enjoy your Christmas festivities.

So, as of yesterday Winston is registered and fully road legal in Oregon! There was a small delay with the DMV, as they initially wanted to see a "title" document, but as Vicroads in Victoria Australia do not issue such a document, I had a couple of weeks of minor concern before the nice lady at the DMV agreed that I clearly owned the vehicle, based on the extensive documentation I was able to provide. Bizarrely, (to someone used to the heavy regulation I am accustomed to in Australia), the "inspection" consisted of checking that the VIN number on the vehicle corresponded to the one on the documents. After that... DONE! No actual safety inspection, no check that the brakes work, the headlights point in the right direction, that there are seatbelts, the suspension isn't knackered or the foglights are the wrong colour... Nil! God bless America! (Until your unsafe vehicle causes a problem, death or damage, then you're screwed, but I do appreciate the accent here on personal responsibility over intrusive over-regulation). That said, I also appreciate that in NZ and the UK, the requirement for regular safety checks (Warrant of Fitness and M.O.T.) gives an assurance to everyone that the vehicles around them aren't (theoretically) ill maintained death traps. Don't start me on the pathetic half assed Vicroads "buy it, get it checked, then never ever bother again" philosophy... I bought Winston in 1996. He got a roadworthy certificate then, and has never been required to be tested since. I think that's pretty terrible. As a bonus, I paid US$448, of which $100 is for the personalised plate (KRO214, the number Winston has always carried), the title fees, etc, and 2 years registration! The actual yearly registration around UD$110 per year. Bloody bargain! The next question is... How long can I drive him on his Victorian number plates (bearing in mind that the number KRO214 is legal and correct) before a police officer notices? I know it's silly, but I do like his Victorian plates...
