I've been having gas smells everytime I fill up the car until it gets to about the 3/4 level lately. I finally got to it this Saturday morning and have a question. In pulling the filler tube to replace the two sections of hose I found that there is a 1" flexible tube running from the fill spout to the gas tank inside the filler tube. It appears to be original from 1965 and I'm wondering what purpose it had? I've pulled it out and decided to not put it back in as it seems to cause the gas to foam a lot while filling the tank. Replaced the two sections of hose that connect the fill spout to the tank and resealed the pickup tube also. So far, the gas smell has gone away.

It is to allow better venting when filling. It does cut out a lot of but not all blowback especially with high volume filler spouts. It also reduces sloshout with a brimmed tank when cornering as the Mk1-M2 tank cap sealing was not as good as the Mk3/P5B
