Hello, I wasn't paying full attention when undertaking the strip down last night and didn't note if the diaphragm spring was in 4 pieces before or after I removed the circlip. I understand from the detailed thread on a BW M35 rebuild that this is a common problem - yes? I have one supplied in the rebuild kit so I'm not too worried just annoyed I wasn't paying more attention. I wouldn't have thought removing a circlip would break this into 4 but I guess I'll never know. Cheers Fraser Attachment Deleted

Hi Fraser, you're obviously rebuilding a BW35 transmission. They were a universal trans found in many mass produced cars around the world (circa. 1950s - 1980s) The diaphram spring would have been broken prior to dismantling the transmission. There are several versions of that particular component (IIRC A,B,C) some more robust and heavy duty, depending upon the application. Below is a heavier duty diaphram spring with the designated "C" stamped on it on the RHS.

The heavy duty diaphragm spring is the one that's broken and the only type readilly available now unless you get hold of some new old stock. It's broken like that for one of two reasons, or a combination of them both. Generally they are the better type.
