Well I would rather have spent to time going to the NEC and meeting people but decided instead to replace the rear crank oil seal and give myself unneeded stress. Have you tried hooking the two ends of the spring together around the crank? I bought the appropriate 4 part kit and made sure it is for a 64 3litre M2 C. I gave myself a couple of days to do it properly. Followed the instructions and on tightening the bearing end cap, at the finish, locked up the crank. Will spend tomorrow investigating. Any ideas what could be impeding the cranks travel?

I got to the bottom of the problem it was the Retainer Half bolts. By slackening them off, the crank moves again. The compression on my six is strong, this time I removed the spark plugs and this aided turning. I removed the baring cap with retainer attached thinking it would move but it took loosening the bolts on the top half before she would turn. It is all back together and the crank turns. My next question how tight should the Retainer bolts be and what difference will it make to the new seal's ability to stop oil?

What an amateur - it makes a great difference if one puts the Retainers on the right way around as the diagram clearly shows. Anyway all is now fine and working as it should. Sorry about this thread.

No need to say sorry - everyone can learn from their own and others mistakes. I hope it seals properly but do not expect 100% oil-tightness

I am pretty sure that I have tried to put the retainers on the wrong way round before. I also have a friend who built his business around servicing / fixing Rovers from P3 to P6. I can happily tell him about my screw-ups because he can always trump it with one of his own.
