Re neglected cars - I have just replaced the headgasket on my straight six Mk2 Coupe Auto - its been blowing for 2 years and almost 8000 miles. It was drinking 1/2 gallon of water per week in the end( I stopped adding antifreeze two winters ago). It was also using more than 150mpp of oil through rock hard inlet valve seals It always started first time though, a little roughly till the rust burnt off numbers 4/5 plugs but pulled well. Its much better now and uses less oil and petrol. Can you imagine modern cars running in this state?

Phil do you think you could even change a head gasket on a modern car? I know I would not even try on my vectra! About the only thing I can do on it is change the plugs and air filter! Anything else and its got to go to the garage. Give me an old car anyday

;D I did a Mk2 Cavalier once and it was more of a bother as the engine is so deep in the engine bay.
Modern cars are not for DIY thats why I do not have them - my youngest is the 72 P5B saloon and oldest 1938 P2 16

I agree. Rose tinted glasses or not, motoring in the past was great fun, even bump starting on a winters day. (not meant to do it with vehicles with catalytic converters) I cut my teeth on working on cars with my dad, pumping the pedal whilst we bled the brakes, guiding the car up the car ramps. DUPLI-COLOUR spray can paint, etc. Sadly he went to his breakers yard seven years ago but I know he would love what I am doing now. ;)GlennR

I know what you mean Glenn. I had to sit and pump the break peddle while my dad was lying under the car shouting “pump”, “hold it down”, “pump again”. That was 20 years ago and I found my self in my car two weeks ago listing to “pump”, “hold it down”, “pump again” as he helped me bleed the breaks on my car.

Talking of sunny weather, I might fit the A/C system I brought a couple of years ago. I had new rubber hoses made and serviced most parts, had brackets powder coated but panicked at the thought of drilling throught the bulkhead into the passenger compartment. I am over that now and may fit it this year so lets have the hot weather! ;D
