I thought that I would start this new thread to stay on topic.
I have a 1963, P5 MK IIa, Saloon, NADA with AC. It looks like the AC was installed at the dealer.
Davidgatrell asked "What is the correct location for the evaporator?"
I'm not sure that "correct location" describes the location in my car. The evaporator is located under the dash enclosed in a unit that has its own fan and venting system.
How did you install your evaporator? Did you use the fan from the existing system?
In my car, a large portion of the parcel shelf is taken up by the air conditioning blower/evaporator.

Good idea but have you tried Search on this forum and the old one as topic crops up regularly As none of these were factory fitted the "correct" location is wherever the various sized components, from different manufacturers, can be slotted in. The V8's do not seem to have any advantage over the 3 Litres in respect of engine room either and with the Mk3 auto's the oil cooler gets in the way as well All seem to use part of the parcel shelf and on P5B's the centre tool tray had to be relocated so there must be a section below the shelf as well. With modern compact units it should surely be much easier to fit AC without it looking the heath-robinson affair that some of the "period" conversions?

I replied last night to Litho but my message is not on my screen. Will that mean it is lost?

Sorry David it does look like your message disappeared into the black hole. This does happen at odd times. I've usually found it does this after you have hit the post reply button and then you lose your internet connection. It's just a case of re-doing it.

My evaporator must be similar. The housing is complete with fan, controls, and four cold air outlets. It is too high to fit on the parcel shelf. I put it under the shelf above the gear box cover. My car is an auto with the selector on the steering column. The tool tray is on the passenger side. I took out three ash trays and the lighter. Checking and filling the gear box is an even bigger task than it was.
What is NADA?

North American Dollar Area = NADA. I have a complete A/C system from a 1970's ROver P5b ready to fit, but I did not want to chop the front parcel shelf (which is where I believe the evaporator assembly is intended to fit). I had all brackets powder coated and all new hoses made for the new gas, just need to nerve to fit it!! I could sell it I suppose.
Cheers

I should have been a little more accurate in my description of the location of my evaporator. They cut the parcel shelf to install the evaporator and it is very close to bottom of the radio.
David, can you post the name of the shop that you purchased your parts at? I'd like to explore moving from R12 to R134a, plus it seems that my car has two condensors: one located in front of the radiator and the other located under the car, close to the boot, positioned horizontally. I want to figure out whether I can delete the horizontal condensor because it looks like an accident ready to happen.
Thanks

Ouch. I am not too keen on having the condensor where road debris can damage it. I purchased most of the material I needed from: Airtique. in Cleburne, Texas 817 641-6933 www.air-tique.com They were helpful and shipped as promised. I bought the compressor from e-bay while corresponding with another vendor. His goods when they arrived were not as stated but I did get my money back. My condensor is 14" by 25". If I had it to do again I would ask their advice on using a 14" by 20" as it was a real challenge getting the 25" to fit. I have not had the R134a put in yet due to my engine problem. I expect to get the engine finished in the next 2/3 weeks

Thought this might be the best thread to ask a simple question:
I have a 1966 rover p5 MKII that had AC in it and the genius (previous owner) took it out and lost it. I am trying to put it all back together but there is no info in oarts book or workshop manual on how it is supposed to go back together or the belt layout, etc.
any idea how i can find this info?
thanks,
mike

My car is a 1965 Mkiic with Westlake head so should be similar to yours. I took out the adjusting pulley for the fan/water pump belt and made brackets on the front cover and the engine support bracket to mount the compressor. I can tilt the compressor back and forth to tension the [ longer ] belt. Space is tight. I probably should have used a smaller compressor. I hope this is some help.

Thanks for the info, but I would really like to know if anyone has pictures, specs or layout of the AC system. I just can't find anything anywhere...

Allan NZ Is your car a P5 MkIIb or is it a P5B (as in Buick)? My car has the 6 cylinder engine. If you have the V8, the brackets I made would not be suitable. I do not have a digital camera, but have some photographs I would be happy to mail to you if I had your address.

Sorry, these are not off my car but they were posted on this site. The images CHUNKY posted are not now available to view but you can e mail him and he can hopefully send the photo's to you. me006f3371@blueyonder.co.ukCHUNKY wrote: I will post more pictures soon of the under bonnet bits, but for now the compressor is mounted on the right of the engine bay as you look at it, and the fuel pump is removed to allow the fitting of the bracket and replaced with an electric pump under the car. The condensor is mounted in front of the rad and is just located in two welled bits of angle, also the cooling fan is a viscous type, with i think about 8 on 10 blades. I hope this helps. GlennR
