gday everybody i just got hold of a P5 3 liter its a 1959 model with auto body number 00000047 it has 40,000 miles on the clock (whats that in ks?) and has been stored for 20 years. i got it going (after changing the fuel pump) and it sounds great. took it for a drive around the block and the auto slips when i stop and then go. im sure it just needs the fluid in the old borg warner replaced but i cant find a filler or cooler. where do i add some fresh fluid? im new to british cars but have heaps of experiance with aussie and yanky iron and have noticed that the auto seems to be the same as aussie falcons and cortinas that had the 4.1 6cyl engine in the mid 70s BW35 (does any one know) lastly i think you guys have a great website that i will be visiting a lot now that i have my ROVER 3 LITER SALOON (is that how i say it)?? cheers Rod

sorry for all the Qs but ive been looking at your website and it looks like all rovers of the vintage i have are suposed to have leather and wood.
mine dosnt have these things. around the windows it has like a vynal covered plastic and the seats have a canvas type thing thats called HOUNDS TOOTH (it smells like an old tent)
mabe rover thought these things would not last well in Australia (they would be right) i have a 1999 ford fairlane concorde with leather trim and it shrunk and cracked about 4 years ago
sorry for all the Qs i LOVE MY ROVER
cheers Rod

Hi Rod welcome to the converted, the year would suggest yours is a very early MK1. Does it have drum brakes and perspex vents over the top of the windows. If yes then the auto is a borg warner DG box,the BW35 was only used on late models such as my MK3 coupe and 3.5 sedan. Please be carefull which auto trans fluid you use, search this site on that subject.(brilliant site ;D). If by any chance you are in Adelaide I could let you see the workshop manual. Join a club, Rover clubs are going from strength to strength in Australia.

You have a very rare raly Mk1 so look after it. The gearbox filler is under the transmission tunnel via a rubber plug.
If you hav edriven with it slipping you may have damaged it as theese boxes are so vert sensitive to low or incorrect fluid- read all about it on other posts

Lift up the tunnel carpet and remove a lrage rubber grommet (on the left) the dipstick/filler is underneat with an oval shaped handle
