Hi..
Now that I've been convinced to leave my lovely 3 litre as just that, I'm planning on completly overhauling the engine...
I thinking:
- Rebored - Crankshaft grind - head skimmed
Would I have trouble getting pistons, rings, bearings, etc to suit do you think?
Andrew.

Good show - the problem is your location which I have just noticed!
All parts I thinks still available in the UK but with any rebuild you to need find out waht yours needs before regrinding/reboring/sleeving so this is the first stage.
Once you know the availablity and whether such items can be sourced locally/imported then you can weigh up the cost.
Even in the UK the 3 litre engine is more expensive to rebuild than the V8 but I doubt this would be more than converting as you would have to find a V8 subframe unless someone is very clever with tubular fabrication to make the engine bearers.
Try Wadhams initially

Excellent.. Thanks for that.. I'll start at least with the basics of valves, rings and bearings..

Andrew, are you sure the engine needs a complete rebuild? If it is running sluggishly, this might well be down to ignition/carburation and I would start there. How many miles has it done and what makes you think a rebuild is necessary? Are there clouds of smoke emanating from the exhaust and anvil-like sounds from the engine? Parts are generally readily available in the UK from JRW & others. What do fellow owners in the antipodes advise? You can check them out on Members button above.

It has a leak from the rear main seal that needs to be fixed... Thus a rather arduous task is ensuing..

They all leak there - just make sure the breathers on side and Rocker cover are not blocked unless it has a closed circuit system that some export models have apparently . If so disconnect to see waht effect it has.
The seal is replaceable with a speclal 2 part affair once the gearbox/bellhousing has been removed which is (jusT) poss with the Mk3

Some time ago, I had quite a severe leak from the rear main seal on my P5B. I tested the crankcase pressure and found it to be positive, even at tickover. A thorough clean of all the breathers resulted in a vacuum in the crankcase and a complete cure for the leak Pressure in the crankcase is the most common reason for oil leaks from the main seals. Always worth checking first.

Thanks once again for the advice on the rear main seal... I'll try your suggestion and report back with my findings.. see if I can post some pictures up of my P5 for you all to see!
