Hi All,
I have done some searching on oil breathers but although it mentions them alot, it doesnt give me specifics.
I thought I had a rear main oil leak and a busted sump gasket, but upon closer inspection I see that it is wet with oil sludge from the sump all the way up to the oil breather.
I have seen it mentioned to make sure they are clear. What am I looking for and how do I clean it safely?
Cheers
Damian

One is part of the oil filler cap and another is on the rear of the rocker cover. They have a wire mesh inside which can be cleaned by swilling in parafin. They should then be lightly oiled to prevent rust. If they are clogged up and this will be obvious then replacement is the only option.
A 3rd one is underneath the manifold and is just a tube in a tin box. It unbolts nad can then be cleaned out if blocked with carbon.
Some export models apparently had a ful closed circuit system which may be better converted to the standard system.
Although it is worth cleaning them it may be that you have serious piston/bore wear

These metal breathers can be easily cleaned out by soaking in a little petrol or spraying them through with Carburettor Cleaner. When servicing the car, just remember to pull them off and look through them, if you can't see through them, they're blocked!

Quite right Freddy but they are much larger on 3 Litres that the puny mini types used for V8's and one is held on by a set screw These filters are easy to clean if the crud has not turned to carbon and carb cleaner may well dissolve this stuff if its left to soak
