Browsing in WHS today and noticed a new book by Richard Hammond of Top Gear fame. In it are certain naff and U and non-U cars and also the type of modern cars to have or to avoid for different jobs! There is a small section with Classic cars and the P5B Coupe is listed as one to avoid. Less than complimentary comments were made including some refernce to 1960's Civil Servants. Perhaps this book should be one to avoid - new readers should of course immediately order a copy of James Taylor's definitive history from the Club now that Xmas is looming

That makes it a hypocritical statement if it is affiliated to Top Gear as I remember Quentin Wilson was very complimentary about the car, and was Richard Hammond making the same statement when the Admiralty Blue/Silver Birch was featured with him and Jeremy Clarkson? I never saw that episode as I was cleaning my bowler hat and oiling the quick release mechanism on my umbrella at the time

Its mainly critical about all sorts of modern cars anyway although he has some very apt comments about Classic car enthusiasts generally. I read recently that the BMW 3 Series is the new Millennium equivalent of the reps Ford Cortina of the 1970's and that BMW's outsell Mondeo's in the UK now. Just desserts for what they did to Rover Does anybody admit to buying a BMW nowadays new out of their own money?

Hi Phil, I have never understood the modern passion for owning a BMW. I have heard that it is just a 'designer' thing, to be able to say that you have a BMW means more than what you can actually get out of owning one. Or is it just me? I would like a Rover 75 Turbo Diesel though! TTFN Freddy Adrian PS I saw the Richard Hammond P5B feature and he praised the car and spoke very well of it. Why the change of tone I wonder.

Can't understand this as I saw the episode where Hammond took the P5b for a run and have never seen him look so happy driving a car.Beginning to think that the 3 of them just don't like anything on the road unless It's a DB9

Journalists change their tunes just to sell copy - its quite amusing but £7.99 will buy a few litres of petrol

I certainly am not interested in BMW's. However it is interesting to note that they break down almost as much as Mondeo's, and cost a lot more to repair. My youngest son has a 535ci, and he got a fright the other week when he had to shell out just under £500 for a service. I just smiled when he told me. That's the equivalent of 25 annual services on the P5's.
