Hi there, My dynamo has given up the ghost, and reading a previous thread the big obstacle to changing to an alternator was the power steering pump. My 1963 MKII has no power steering so is it safe to assume that i could convert to an alternator reasonably simply. Also as i live in New Zealand may be tough to source a reliable dynamo

Yes this is no problem - you just have to make sure the pullies are in line - its better to put in new cables to the ammeter and warning light of the correct size for the alternator amperage although if in good condition and the alternator is of low output you could just get way with connecting the B and D cables together at the reg box and the F to the WL
