Hi All,
First off, thanks for all the helpful comments guys. I have been a Roverer(?) for a short time but it has been fairly smooth sailing due in no small part to this forum.
My latest drama is that when I push in the cigarette lighter knob, the whole car dies. There is still power, but the engine actually cuts out. Upon inpecting the ash trays, I find that they have never been touched so I dare say non smokers were the norm in the old girl. This happens with anything I plug into there as well as the lighter itself.
Has anyone had this before? I was trying to hook up my racing performance box to measure the speedo and also do a standing 1/4mile time for a laugh. Ill post up the results though if anyone is interested in how fast an auto 3l goes.
Cheers
Damian

Could be a dead short - remove clean/replace the offending body. It just unscrews. May point to a loose connection somewhere in the main battery (brown circuit) eg ammeter Lucars and bullets

Will do tonight.
Although I made a joke of it, it actually may be a kill switch. I was looking through the receipts and just noted the installation of a kill switch. I looked everywhere for it but couldnt find it at all.
hmm...

Is your car manual or automatic? Beware as both boxes were barely capable of coping with raw power of of over 130BHP! Especially when worn. The manual gearbox dates from the early 30's when used with engines of 40BHP. My 1939 Rover (P2) develops 55BHP from 2100cc & 6 cylinders and the gearbox is not that much differentto the last 3 litres.
The DG box was used on big engined cars and arguably provided the bands and clutches being adjusted/setup properly was stronger

Thanks Phil. Once again proving that you have probably forgotten more than ill ever know.
Just finished chasing wires and guess what...it IS a kill switch!
I thought of it as a joke but it is true. If anyone is interested in how it is done, just ask and Ill post some pics. It is so simple its laughable.
Cheers

Short out the CB terminal of the coil is the usual and safest way -- this would only require a lead going to the centre feed of the lighter in place of the Purple battery feed

Correct!
Big Kev, do you still want a pic? Am happy to send if you like.
The latest drama is that the dash started sending me smoke signals which I read to pull over. Dont you love that smell...
The panel switch burnt itself out. If someone has a spare, let me know and Ill send some hard earned your way. Other wise once the part I ordered from Wadhams a few weeks ago actually turns up, Ill get it from there.
Cheers Damo

Secondhand panel ie Console switches are a waste of money as they are likely to be as bad as your own. They are inadequate to take teh load particularly on P5B's which have higher rated sealed beams
When you get your new one wire it through a minature relay as I have doen - see SEARCH

No worries Kev. Will do tonight.
I am using the opportunity to get to know the wiring and have replaced the light bulbs with leds. The old lights, although working, wouldnt show much at night.
FYI I use a performance box gps speedo that attaches to the windscreen and it shows my speedo is out about 7 mph. I still havent got my quarter mile time yet!

At what speed is your speedo 7mph out? If that's at 70mph then allowing a 10% error your speedo is just about legal (in the UK) If it's at 30mph then the speedo is illegal (in the UK) by being about 20% out.
