After 4 years as a club member I am in the process of actually buying a P5B. However I am concerned about authenticity of car I am looking at.
It is a G reg coupe. The history includes a number of MOT certificates. Most quote a vehicle ID number of 84501701B but one has an ID of 845605A. Any idea what this number might be? Also is there a way of using the main vehicle ID to check the original as manufactured specification of the car?

84501701B tells us it is a 1969 model 3.5 coupe. The 'B' suffix was only used between Aug68 and Dec68. No idea what the shorter number is though. Look here www.heritage-motor-centre.co.uk/archive/certificate/default.htm to get a Heritage certificate which may give full details of the car as supplied by Rover. Itcosts £28 though, so maybe you want to wait until you have bought the car.

Keith, thanks for prompt response. You say it confirms a 1969 car but then go on to say the B suffix was onyl used to Dec68. Did you mean Dec69 or is there just some sort of time lag in use of the ID numbers?. The registration doc says car first registered on 10 Jan 1969 so I guess it is still possiblef or it to be showing something that had only just stopped being used.
Thanks for tip re heritage certificate

By saying 'a 1969 model' I was refering to the model year. In those days the model year started around Sept of the previous year... a bit like the July issue of Practical Classics being for sale in June! If the car was first registered on 10 Jan 69, it is almost certain that the car was built in 1968... delivery, dealer prep etc takes time.

Well actually, all I'm doing is sharing James Taylor's knowledge ;D But I'm happy to help. Why not buy his book - "Rover P5 and P5B, The Complete Story"? As a club member, get it here ===>>> www.roverp5club.org.uk/regalia.htm

Evening Keith, nice to meet you at Bromley today, hope all went well after I left and the organisers didn't come round asking awkward questions! I've sent a quick note to Take Five along with a couple of pictures of our cars Maybe next year we'll go for an 'official' stand? It was a great spot near the arena, I'm sure we could get a dozen cars together given the number of P5s in the one-make area! All the best

just read the thread -- ooer I had the same problem once in my Warwick GT (anyone remember those?). I got into fourth on the motorway but couldn't get overdrive fifth, then when I came up the slip road to the roundabout I couldn't engage any other gears, lots of revs but no action. Bottom line was the clutch had gone. re Bromley, bit disappointing as an A40 owner that no-one noticed the change of marque! Still, great reception from the crowds, surely worth getting a stand of our own next year -- put you down as maybe?!

Yes Ian, I'll happily take part. But I'm a bit too far away to help much with the preparation though.
