If the markings on the "flywheel" cannot be seen i.e.covering of rust, is it possible to tune the car? Are the flywheel markings only visible through the small trapdoor as viewed under the bonnet. If so there is very little room to remove rust. Would I also remove any markings by dealing with the rust? Any expert advice would be much appreciated. I do hope I havn't raised a problem that is unsolvable. Tony

Assuming its a Mk1 or 11
The markings are etched into the flywheel so should withstand a light wipe over with some course w/d or emery paper held through the inspection hole whle some turns the engine over with starting handle.
I usually wipe over the marks with white paint so that they can be easily picked up with a strobe which is the best way to tune these.
Alternatively markings can be made set out on the front pulley and a pointer arranged
