When watching the temperture gauge, what exactly are we looking for. Is anything between 75-100C o.k. Do we wait until we see the steam and then panic? Where exactly is the optimum temperature for precise running? When the temperature passes the half way mark between 75-100 I'm the one that starts getting hot! A figure would be most helpful or a position on the dial.

The P5 gauge is not calibrated and boiling point is well over 100 deg C because of the high pressure cooling system. On the hottest day in the UK is slow traffic it may just go above N but still with the green bit. This is assuming the rad is unblocked and the block not scaled up.
Steaming should not occur - the stat opens at 82 so the optimum temp will be around this say up to 90 - any higher and fuel vaporisation may occur. If it gets into the red its serious!!
