3 LITRE MK1 1959 AUTO (FRONT BENCH SEAT)
I have read the thread on seat belts but cannot find the answers I am looking for. Is it possible to fit any type of seat belts to this early car bearing in mind that the front seat is of the bench type? I am not concerned about fixing bolts or plates to the floor but wonder what sort of interior damage would result to the side pillars. I am not sure whether any facility is in place to fit belts but I doubt whether in 1959 they had even been invented! Any advice would be most appreciated and I apologise if answers to my questions have already been covered. One last point: where do you go to have the job done?

I have seen belts fitted to early Mk1's - seat belts were around before then! There will be some interior damage in that holes will have to be cut/drilled in the B/C posts trim/steel and carpets/floor. The seat belt stalks will fit easily between the front seat cushion I would see if Kwikfit can do them? See also and do Search autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/roverp4club/

Thanks Phil. When you mention stalks, does that mean Inertia Seat Belts? On reflection, I think it's better to damage the car rather than the occupants!

Yes - modern Inertia belts can be and are fitted to all P5's and are far more convenient than tangly statics that are too restrictive anyway if adjusted properly

Tony, try this website:- www.securon.co.ukI didn't realise until recently that my 1973 P5B saloon is fitted with these belts. I don't know whether they were factory fitted or fitted at a later date, but whatever, they are lovely belts and they do a range of colours for the webbing too. They cover all the Rovers from P4's to P6's and more.

Yup I agree with John. Securon will be able to sort you out, and as he has already stated, they do a choice of colours too !

Hi to all. Just checked the Securon site and the seat belt that I wanted (beige - part No 500/45)comes to £93 per belt - a bit pricey perhaps. Worth looking at www.europaspares.com where a similar (may not be exact) is priced at about £40 - £50. This includes various sizes of receiver stalk and colours black, grey, blue, red and beige. Yes I can vouch for Securon and Europa - the problem is fitting them SAFELY. I am not certain whether Mk1 had anchorages - my friend Peter Harrison has the 2 tone Green Mk1 pictured in James Taylors book. I am certain he fitted them in himself anchorages and all and that they are inertia reels.
Its easy to remove the B/C post trim to see if there is a bolt hole at head height approx

Richard, I have fitted Securon 500/45 belts. The problem with Securon is that they don't like selling small quantities. They will sell one or a pair, but at the ridiculous prices that you have found. Last September I purchased a pair for £81.14 +vat from my local factors, Pro Parts Ltd in Waterlooville - maybe not too far from Whiteley. There is a catch though... they only do black. You are welcome to see the black belts fitted in a buckskin interior, I think they look ok. Email me your phone number if interested. Regards Keith

Keith,
Many thanks for the offer. However, for £10 extra per seat belt, I really fancy the beige colour and will order two later today once I measure and confirm the current stalk lengths.

Richard, that fine. But re-reading my post I see I didn't make the price clear. £81.14 for two belts. I.e. £40.57 each (plus vat).

Thanks Keith.
The ones I propose to order from Europaspares are £50 each inclusive of vat, so not much in it pricewise - but I do get the choice of colours.

Just ordered qty 2 front inertia seat belts in beige from Europaspares. However, my previous entry is wrong regarding vat. Trouble with a lot of these sites is that you don't get to know the full totals until after your purchase committment - although in this case I reckon I just could have binned the order. Anyway, the total price is thus: 2 x inertia seat belts in beige (45cm stalk) £100.80 VAT £17.64, delivery £11.16. Total = £129.60. This makes Keith's supplier much more attractive - but I really wanted beige.

I have got black Securon inertia belts fitted in a Buckskin trimmed car and they certainly don't look out of place. At the moment I have one black belt and one grey belt fitted to a Saddletan trim, but that was of necessity as one of them was frayed, and for the MOT I had to do a swop. There is a seatbelt company in Buckinghamshire that will refurbish and re-webb any frayed belts so I will have to see what they offer shortly. So if any of you have belts that are frayed etc don't throw them away but get them re-done. I cannot remember their website address but when I find it I will post it on this thread.

I have got black Securon replacements in my P5B saloon and they are very neat and esay to operate. In my P5 Coupe I have grey period Kangols inertia's which are a bit bulky.
I noticed a place offering fitting for all classic cars in this weeks Classic Car Weekly its called Quickfitt but I did not not write the full website address down and a search does not reveal it.
I will look again tomorrow

Yes, Quickfit also advertise in Practical Classics: Quickfit Safety Systems UK Inertia House Lowther Rd Stanmore Middlesex HA7 1EP T: 020-8206-0101 www.quickfitsbs.co.uk/Their website is pretty basic though. I can recall an article in Practical Classics sometime last year where Quickfit were highly praised.

Their website is under construction that's why it's so basic. That is the company I was looking for except that I got the county wrong as I was thinking of Carburettor Exchange and the two got muddled up. It wasn't listed in the Feb edition of PC but I found it in the August edition.

Quite right - I had not got that far yet and I just looked at the back classifieds. (I actually subscribe to this one and although it arrived before Christmas I have not yet finished its scrutiny!)
Not sure whether this is near to Tony though?

Thanks for a very detailed explanation folks especially the supplier websites. I am located near Ipswich and have enough info to sort things out. Tony

Received my beige seat belts from Europaspares today. They also gave me a £10 discount. I did notice that the belts supplied are Securon belts, so I seem to have saved quite a bit against the Securon price of £93 per belt.

If my memory serves me correct you cannot purchase your seatbelts direct from Securon. They tell you to go to your nearest motorfactors who can get them at competetive prices from them. If you don't know who that might be you can get in touch with them and they will give you the nearest stockist. That's why you saved quite a bit of money on the Securon quoted price.
