Sadly I think these figures aren't far off the mark for a straight 6 - the V8's command more even though the 6's are probably better quality machines. The real problem now is that it does cost more to restore one properly than they are worth.
It's swings and roundabouts - P5's inflate to silly prices and they all get snapped up for restoration to make money and the real enthusiasts can't afford them - or they stay fairly cheap and we can all enjoy them restored or not!

I have to agree with ROVERP5.
With prices being what they are, there is no incentive to restore them. This is why the vast majority end up uncared for and sold so cheaply. Good if you want to buy, but not if you want to sell. Those that buy them for so little money usually have big ideas, but invariably cannot afford either the running costs or the repair/restoration costs, and also do not have the skills or equipment to do it themselves. The vast majority of these cars just end up being stripped down to become another unfinished project, or sold to breakers of banger racers.
While I agree that its only a hobby, and that you will never get any return on money spent, it would be nice to know that you could get at least something back.
My Rover is in the garage at this moment less its engine and other bits I have given to members of this forum to help them out, but if I am honest, I cannot justify spending the money, or a couple of years of my time on it. I suppose I have got a foolish emotional attachment to it, but I allow it to remain in the garage, because I know if I put it outside under a cover.......thats the end !

"With prices being what they are, there is no incentive to restore them. " If financial return is what you are looking for, then restoring old car is not the way to make money - unless you find an Aston Martin DB4GT in a barn and buy it for peanuts. Then you could auction that kind of car and literally make tens of thousands of £ without lifting a finger. Sad fact is - almost without exception, the cost of restoration (especially paying for a professional restoration) will always be greater than the value of the finished article. So if you want my advice, buy a (correctly) restored car!! It will cost you less than restoring one, and you can enjoy it straight away. Cheers.

A lot of what you say makes sense Freddy what ever car you restore "if you restore it correctly" will cost far more than it is worth, the effort put in to restoring a P5B yourself is the same for any car even a RR it's just the cost of bits that makes the difference. I know what mine has cost in both effort and £'s and for a fact it would have cost a small fortune to have done what I have done already by a restorer! the cost of the car in 1973 was £400 VALUE FOR MONEY or what? I think so

Unfortunately, you appear to have missed the point.
No one but a fool (or a dealer or a "professional" restorer) would imagine they will make any money from old cars. I certainly do not ! But the difference between what you spend and what you might recoup, will make many people (including me) think twice about it.
This is the reason why so many cars are scrapped, broken up, or banger raced, and THAT, my friends, I find a travesty !

Sorry to bring up this continual old chestnut so recently it had gone quiet again but had to have my two pennorth when I read the article in this weeks Classic Car Weekly about a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. As I am sure you all know the Rover P5 and P5b was known as the poor mans's Rolls Royce having so much in common as to build quality - same leather, same engine type (3 Litres), body built by PSF and numerous other parts I personally think there is no comparison as the P5 beats it by a mile especially the 3 Litre. Apparently an old Shadow was sold at auction recently with no reserve and one bid got it at £200 . The car had been dry stored for 20 years and the battery had leaked but it just goes to show that a car is only worth what someone will pay no matter and these Rollers like their successors the Spurs fetch really low prices even beloe half decent P5B's The car is probably worth 10 time that as a breaker so someone is going to be happy either way

About the same price as, for example, a Frogeye.
Which do you think is put together better, more comfortable and easier to use?
I guess its the market that dictates, but the Rover P5 and P5B is a whole lot of car for not a lot of money - even at £10k+. IMO

Has anyone looked at the classified cars for sale on the ROVER P5 CLUB WEBSITE. Some asking prices are up in the £11,000, £10,000, £9,000, £11,500 etc One for sale in Yorkshire, maybe the club chairman might buy one at last!
Cheers
