This might be a sacrilegious question.....especially for the purists:
Given that the twin tail pipe on the p5B was a "pure stylist's caprice" (p133, James Taylor's book), does it mean that a twin pipe could be easily fitted to a p5?
I've seached the forum but only found a reference to one of Phil's p5 cars being so equipped, prior to being copied by Vanguard for their model!
Reason for the question: idle curiosity (because I'm currently without a car anyway) and a belief that those twin pipes look fantastic.

Its a striaght swap although it will make it slightly less quiet. A number of 3 litres have been done anyway as the mild steel back boxes for V8's were more plentiful once

I have the twin tailpipes on my P5B coupe - but as they are a replacement stainless job, they don't have the chrome finishers. Was thinking about buying aftermarket ones as used by the Saxo boys - how sacrilegious is that!!

Whatever turns you on Andy. Personally I would get Stainless Steel finishers fitted rather than chrome. You are fitting mild steel ones in effect that have been chromed and probably not very well done at that, and that of course promotes rust. This shows the stainless steel finisher on my Humber. I have the chrome ones on my P5B but you have to be careful as they protrude beyond the bumper and are at a very convenient shin height, and I've skinned them many a time, it's too easy.

Thanks John - I think what I meant to say was shiny ones! Actually not fussed what they're made of. Curse my metallurgical ignorance I'm a bit confused though cos you seem to be saying go for stainless but you've got chrome on your P5B. The Humber looks great by the way.

Andy, the chrome finishers were fitted to the P5B nearly four years ago. The St/steel finisher was fitted when I had a complete stainless system fitted on the Humber just over two years ago.
The difference is the stainless one has a rolled edge which makes it shin friendly the chrome one is as sharp as a razor.
The Humber will be coming out shortly as I shall be driving it over to Northern Ireland to do a wedding there in May, so I'll be getting it ready, and clocking up some miles first.

My P5B tail pipes were made to measure by Stainless Exhaust Specialists nr Nottingham (01623-552262). They look like straight exit tail pipes with rolled ends/edges but the exhaust fumes come out at the bottom - so no stains on the garage wall or on my legs when near them. The fumes fall on to old newspaper on the floor!!

That sounds like a good idea Freddy, exhaust coming out of the bottom of the pipes and not where you would expect them. I agree you can inadvertantly get mucky trousers when you brush past the pipes.

I have always like Humbers even the last Arrow designs - the tail pipe is a good idea too but it would increase turbulence and create more noise surely - though probaly not as much a full stainless system

I haven't noticed any increase in noise with a full stainless system on the Supersnipe, then again it's definitely much quieter than when I picked the car up, with a hole in the centre box. I would have thought that the only time you would get more noise is if the whole system is made up from very thin walled material. By the way Phil when I remember I'll add a pic of my 'Arrow' series Singer Vogue. I just wish I still had my one from the 70's as I have found out that only 250 were produced in the colour I had. It's the rarest colour of the whole range.
