Hey There, My MKII's petrol cap cover does not seem to close completely flush and when it rains water seeps through into the well and I am imagining some slops down into the tank as well. There doesn't seem to be any adjustment to close the gap. About 3mm or 1/8 inch. ANy ideas

The filler cap seal compresses and perishes - the club stock them but for Mk3's onwards only. It used to be a common fault when the cars were used more as water got into the petrol tank because the drain was blocked with leaves/dead spiders etc or flatened rubber tube on 3.5 litres.
It then settles in the bottom of the tank as petrol floats on water and either rsuts through the tank or causes bad running when it gets to the level of the tank pickup!
It needs sorting quickly but they were always triublesome - set SEARCH for 1500 days and read loads more as this cropped sometime ago but there is no permanent solution as yet

I had same problem last week , bought replacement seal from wadhams, pulled old one out with pliers and with the help of some olive oil ( first thing handy ) and a bit of jiggerry ( no pokery) with a little flat bladed screwdriver it fitted easily and solved the problem.ScarlettWill

Yes but the earlier filler arrangements (3 sorts) were completely different to Mk3 onwards version that went onto the P5B
