Just got myself a Rover P5b saloon. Among the few jobs identified was the clonky gear change at most times, so I would like to adjust the brake bands at the earliest opportunity. Looking at the maint. manual, it shows a special tool that looks just like a spacer and a torque tool chained to it. Does anyone know the dimensions of this spacer (looks approx. 1/4 of an inch). I can rig up the torque setting with a spring balance. Many thanks Richard Fitzpatrick

The special tool is a block exactly 1/4" thickness
Clonking is a comon fault with these boxes more often caused by too high an idle speed, badly adjusted downshift cable, worn UJ's or too much backlash in the back axle.
As you will be removing the sump you will renew half the oil as the remaining half get left behind in the Torque Converter so this can also help. Its best to do the oil chnage twice as it leaves only 1/4 of the old oil in!
Be on the watch for any black or brown bits in the oil or pink fluid as if found the box has had it and the cooler as well if the oil is pink
