I have just replaced my tired old p5b heads for new SD1 unleaded heads. Replaced push rods rockers and tappets. After 87 miles I have now worn out the cam shaft, before i replace the cam and install new lifters is there any other problems i am going to high light like piston rings etc when i put everything back together. Although the cam shaft looked ok I feel installing the new items above was just to much for the old cam, am I right or have I missed something very important ???Any help nuch appreciated.

Did you check for pre-load in the lifters when you assembled the new heads onto the old block?
This is a procedure not covered in the Rover manuals, but it is detailed on th excellent RPi V8 web pages.
If there is insufficient clearance in the tappet, you get same effect as having no clearance on a manual tappet setup, with wear to whole valve train, even broken valve springs!

Thankyou for pointing me towards RPis web site. I never checked the pre load and reading RPis pages I should of changed the cam shaft as a matter of course. Will order there high performance one tomorrow and start again including the very complicated job of pre loads on the tappets. Thanks for your help.

Did you use composite head gaskets by any chance ?
If you have changed the rockers, you MUST change the rocker shafts too.
Also, if you have been messing about in the "vee" of the engine, you should really clean it out then take off the sump and clean it out. If it is full of crud, which it will be, the cam followers are the first things to suffer.
If you are using RPI, do not use anything more vigorous then their "RP4" camshaft in a heavy car like the P5b, or you will regret it.
