Hi, I am just about ready to go to MoT but the right rear brake is hanging. I have put new rubberparts in the brakecylinder, as I thought the pistons were stuck, but still the same. The shoes have NOT had new linings and have been on the car for years, but the car has been standing for quite some time. When I put the brake together I leave the adjuster almost in first notch and give the pedal some hard operations to center the shoes and the drum rotates freely. But if I turn the adjuster just one or two notches , the drum begins to drag. The handbrake is adjusted in a way so that the lever at the anchor plate is pulled a little. Is this wrong ? Shall it be in the 'total zero position' when the handbrake cable is mounted ? I seem to have to give the adjuster a few notches and set the handbrake so that it pulls a little on the lever at the anchor plate to get a 'good' pedal and a functioning handbrake. But then the brake will not rotate freely, and get more and more stuck if I jut drive a few miles. If I drive 10 miles the brake will eventually start smoking (and this is prohibited in public places) and almost lockup ! Have anybody any experienced in this area, so they can tell me what have I done wrong or overlooked ??

:DThis topic was covered endlessly on thre old board but this seems a classic case of non-floating wheel cylinders.
These must be free to slide so as to centralise the shoes and are well known for seizing up or being tightened up by mechanics who do not know waht they are doing

Oooppps ! I am sorry that this has been covered - I did not see that. I am even more sorry that I am "a mechanics who do not know what I am doing" as I tightened the nuts, allright. But they were tight when I started, if that can be an excuse ! I will straight away go over and loosen the nuts one full turn, so I will just ask all of you not to tell anybody that I have made an error !!

You are not the first and won't be the last to make that small mistake!!
