As ny original alternator has packed up at last, what does the board recommend for replacement?

Virtually any alternator from a later car could be made to fit and would be at least as powerful if not more than the 11AC.
The old site recomended one from a Ford Orion. Bosch or reven the later Lucas types will fit but check the pulley size/type as they may not be interchangeable
Its important to remember that these include the regulator and warning light relay so the 6RA Field relay, the Red/or black regulator and the cylindrical warning light can that looks like an old fashioned flasher unit must all be bypassed and disconnected
The 11AC is very reliable and usually its only the brushes (only one at that) which go and these are cheap. Other than that it can also be any of the foregoing hardware at fault so its easy to find out which one is culprit.

The red warning light goes out but the ammeter shows no charge although it shows discharge when the lights etc are on.

Check it out per the manual sounds like the regulator or 6RA Field isolating relay - the brushes usually fail gradually unless they stick - they are dead easy to check
