Please excuse my ignorance, but was air conditioning an option on the P5B? If not, does anybody know whether it is possible to retro fit? Thanks! Regards, Peter

Please excuse my ignorance if I get this wrong but I believe it was. A friend of mine has it fitted on his P5 Saloon where the tool tray is supposed to be. The tool tray is now located on the left side of the front parcel shelf. That is all the knowledge I have of it but I am sure you will get more replies and details from other members GlennR

It was certainly an option in the North American market in 3 litre days. It was fitted over there by the importers.

:DIt was not an official option anywhere although a number of cars were fitted by the aftermarket firms - see the USA posting by Greg Claus
It fits on the parcel shelf and you have relocate the tool tray.
A car was for sale in Take 5 with it fitted a couple of years ago and a number of articles have appeared therein.
I am sure a modern system could be fitted and this has been covered on here as well try search.

I'm in the process of having a P5B coupe re-built, and have been looking everywhere for someone who can fit air-conditioning to a P5B. Sitting for three hours in a P6 on a stationary motorway on the windless hottest day of the year has told me how much better a P5 will be with air con! Air-con did come as a dealer option, but very few cars in the UK had it fitted. The company who installed the air-con now make bits for racing cars! Motorclimate were the only people I found who would fit air con, and it was at a prohibitive price. Also, from what I gathered talking to them, it would not have been very elegant. I have a picture of an instal where the evaporator unit was installed above the centre console, the tool tray has been removed to fit it in. Alas the guy who did that instal has not moved to Spain and has retired. Please do let me know if you find someone who is willing to do an instal at a reasonable price. I have given up ,for the time being and am getting the car built without air-con. I will, however have a crack at fitting air-con myself, using Land rover discovery condensor, regulator, filter and compressor and a very thin evaporator unit I am trying to get from the U.S. In any event the unit will need to be filled with horrible gue, and pressurised by an air-con company. The five air-con places I spoke to suggested that fitting a new unit would probably work out cheaper than using an original unit anyhow ....

I have a 1969 P5B Saloon with air conditioning. My car spent the first 35 years of its life in Western Asuatralia (where I purchased it) but I beleive the air conditioning was installed during restoration work in 1990. My is fitted as per Glenn R decription -i.e on the transmission console where the tool/picnic tray used to be. My tool kit has been reinstalled in front of the passenger. I have never really used the a/c (even in the 40 degree plus heat of Oz) as it spoils the true noise of the engine and also makes the fuel consumption even more financially perilous than it already is! I think it is a bit of an extravagance in this country. However if you want to have a look at an installed system I am Kent based. regards Andrew

The system I hope to install sounds like yours Andrew, with the in-car unit installed where the tools/picnic tray should be, and the tool tray should re-locate to the passengers side. Mine has a YORK piston type compressor, but I wonder if I should convert to the later Range Rover ROTARY type compressor. I would love to see your A/C installation especially the condensor (in front of the radiator) but I am in the Midlands so not too close to Kent. Regards

My latest research on this has pointed me towards specialist MG parts vendors. It is possible to buy an air-con kit to fit the MGB V8, this should provide all the bits except for the evaporator unit. If you find an evaporator that fits in the hole below the dash and above the console, please publish the model and the supplier on here! Should I have to order a unit from the States, reckon I might get a spare one and wait for the next person to ask about air-con on this message board. Using the car as a daily driver on the A5, M1 and M25, in the middle of summer, I reckon I will get pretty good use out of the system if I ever find all the components.
