Now what? I hab just cleaned out the heater and driven off to the nearest bottle bank when I went to restart it all I got was a click. The indicator lights go out as does the handbrake light. This happens in any gear selector position. I am used to pushing the lever forwards to get a start but it is not this. It is not the battery either.

Sounds like your starter motor has jammed.

Ensure all connexiond are good on the motor plus all earth straps eg batter to car boot and subframe/engine/body.
The solenoid could have failed or jammed its esy to test this by bridging the terminals on the solenoid but watch out for sparks

Yup as T Bar says......I would suspect poor or dirty connections in the main battery lead, probably at the solenoid end. Next, the small connections on the solenoid, Don't forget to check the engine earth strap if that fails !
Let us know how you got on ?

It was the inhibitor switch. One of the leads had fallen off. I never thought it was the solenoid as it clicked in all selector positions. Thanks for your help.
