I have just fitted Halogen bulbs and lens to my 1968 P5b, just because one of my sealed beams had died. I purchased these from JRW who say they replace the existing without any trouble. But reading some posts there is some discussion around fitting a relay to protect the switch, is this correct still. Also the lens and bulb came with a protective cover does this require fitting also. Help in this area would be very much appreciated.

Yes, fit a relay. The switches will thank you.

65 watts is 65 watts John so there is no reason to worry but as Warwick points out if you are worried you could save the load on your old switches by fitting relays.

Its easy to check whether the main lighting switch should have a relay without delay as the plastic insulation sleeves on the cables will show signs of melting which means it's been overheating. This will ultimately cause the total loss of the lights and even a small fire! Every switch I have inspected has shown some and often a serious overheating.
The switch is a special to work the parking lights which was once unobtainable but Wadhams stocked them last time I looked

All my bulbs are LED, better light and very low power demand.

I was told that if you change outer bulbs to LED your instrument panel lights wont work - is that your experience? I think I have 50% illumination strength on my P5B and maybe only 10% on my 3-litre. On the latter i think I have overheating/burning of the holders during past ownership which doesn't help! Did you upgrade any instrument bulbs to LED?

George, when you have time my friend would you be able to let us all know which bulbs you have changed please and for which brand and where you got them from and at what cost if you will??
I am interested in doing this myself TBH albeit I don't really intend to drive mine in the dark if I can help it and it would be usefiul to know also George if you needed to add or upgrade your relays as some have suggested and hinted at.
I have fitted LED bulbs in other cars I own and owned but never had the need to upgrade anything else with the bulbs change

I did not touch the instrument panel bulbs and they are not affected by the exterior bulbs.
