Guys, I have done a search for 2000 days and the only place I can find where the chassis number can be found is on a plate on the nearside pillar. Couple of questions. 1. Would this be the pillar at the door hinge line for the front left door? 2. Is there another location where the number may be stamped - as apposed to a rivetted plate?

No, the plate on the A pillar on the passenger side is the only ID with a chassis number.
There is a number stamped onto a tag under the bonnet, but this appears to be a body number not a chassis number ( remember that in the early days the P5 body was made by Pressed Steel, not by Rover). Body Numbers are not recorded on the Heritage Certificates.

There is a number stamped onto a tag under the bonnet, but this appears to be a body number not a chassis number ( remember that in the early days the P5 body was made by Pressed Steel, not by Rover). Body Numbers are not recorded on the Heritage Certificates. This has always puzzled me a bit. It never made sense to me that a car with no chassis has a body number and a chassis number. Most other monocoque cars that I'm familiar with, regardless of whether or not they had a separate front subframe, had one number and the manufacturer called it either a chassis number OR a body number. But I think I get it now. Am I right in guessing that the chassis number on the A-pillar plate is Rover's number for the car as a whole? This is the equivalent of any other manufacturer's body or chassis number and the number that the vehicle registration authorities are interested in. The body number under the bonnet is Pressed Steel's serial number for the monocoque unit that it supplied to Rover as one piece. Is that correct? So in a way, it's almost the reverse of how it worked in the early days when the car-maker usually built the rolling chassis, the engine, and transmission, and so the engine number and chassis number identified the vehicle. It was the basis of the car to which a coachbuilder added a body, which sometimes got replaced or modified in the course of the car's life.

You are quite correct Warwick! At that time there was no VIN standard anything could be used. The WSM gives more information as Axles and some Electric components all had their numbers too

Interesting thread this. But which of the two numbers is the Pressed Steel number? Could it start with 'BC' ? What does that other 3 digit plate mean ? Mark

Hi fellow P5 fans have just acquired an elderly p5 saloon Mk1 methinks. The only chassis markings are in the engine bay. Is there someone or an organization that can assist me in tracing the provenance of the car before the rebuild commences? i will be transferring most of another mk1 to this one. The other one is rusted, alas. Attachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

I have recently finished refurbishing the engine bay in my P5 MK3 Coupe. Here are the body ID plates. The centre hole in one of the plates is an addition by a previous owner.

Bit of a bore this, but my new baby : P5b LHD registered in NL has had the chassis plate removed, and not reinstated. The Dutch registration document has a number on it: section E: 84300046A. Does this look like it is the original chassis number? Thx BOZ

Yes Boz, that is the chassis number. Normally found on a plate on the L/H front door post (R/H drive) - blank plates are available so you could stamp one up. Here is mine, plus the inner front wing numbers.

Just a guess but the letter/s at the beginning of the body number presumable tell you which variant it is, as in Vince’s plate begins with a C & Sam’s plate with BC, does this mean Coupe & B Coupe? And does the saloon use an S or BS instead? Just thinking out loud🙃
